  • Anybody been pulled over lately?

    Hi Guys,

i was drivin arround today when the police decided to pull me over (Dam Speed cameras) anyway, the officer decided to take an interest in my tft as well as my character display, he even asked me to turn it all on so he could look at it, luckily i got out of it by tellin him it takes ages to start up,

so anyway has anybody else had similar experience with the police? has anybody actually got a ticket for havin an lcd with just winamp? whats the law say about tft's in cars? what should i do to make the system "Legal"?

    Thanks

    Pete

ok well here in victoria the screen must not be on unless the handbrake is on

however if the screen is used for navigation it can be on whenever

i sugest running something like ubd on disk or something so that if ya get pulled over just switch to it and tell em its gps

the other way is to put a switch setup so that you can turn the screen off if you fget pulled over

i got pulled over in my brothers car with a 20x4 and the dumb copper thought it was a turbo timer

pity that his car isnt turbo

anyway i beleive its only a 105 buck fine for a screen but i could be wrong

    cheers

Not really relevant to you guys but here in the UK you can have a screen as long as it is only used for displaying navigation or vehicle control information (which includes control of your stereo). Video (like TV or DVD) must not be in view of the driver whilst the vehicle is in motion.

        Hi all,
Think here in Germany its the same thing with the handbrake - however mine is connected directly and i have a switch with wich a can quickly turn off the screen when someone would stop me.

However my last experience with police was last monday - Damn f**kin videocars . They got me on the "highway - ( i was at about 120 instead of 100 Km/h and the i did'n see a construction area on a little bridge where speed was limited to 80km/h (100m long) so average speed was finally 43km/h too much :-( Damn so in november i 'll have to live 4 weeks without driving license +3 Points to the database .

But they had very cool TFT inside . 5,6" and a superb quality - my car looked very good on it - But i didn't ask for the video

After this i thought of putting a couple of IR transmitting diodes ( IRlamp - don't know how its called exactly (no dictonary here at home )but its used for ex to make cameras see at night ) so the camera which also sees IR light :-) would be "belndet " (don't know if correct )so no pic
        - I know its stupid idea because they would immediatly stop you but i should work

        Regards Felix

Felix: I think you mean to make the IRlamp destroy their image by creating noise on their image?

The cameras should be able to compensate for it.. but if you place it strategically you might be able to obstruct the image of the plates with a nice glow that won't be visible to the human eye

              @ShinkunoNamida:
Yes exactly what I meant. That they would see a white image on their cool TFT's On my next car I'll experiment a bit with cameras and IR lamps

              @Gutter
              Yes and No .
Everywhere in the world people ask me. Hey is it right that in Germany you don't have any speed limit ? and I always say - yes and No - Yes we have some parts of Higway (Autobahn)that are without limit but mostly there are too many people on da road so that you can't driver faster than 180Km/h only at Night or early in the morning- But mostly speed is limited to 100 , 120 or 130 km/h.
If you are up to 40km/h too fast outside citys you got up to 100 and 3 points. with 41 Km you get 3 points 100 and 1 month without driving license Thats my case . On the road especially in Thuringia the love to put mobile radar's and everywhrere in Germany you have "normal cars" looking like the car of your neighbour with cameras . The car who stopped me was a Mercedes Benz 220 from Frankfurt - Looking sport with rear wing , lowered etc etc . who could think that this would be Police !!!
Now I have to respect not to "earn" some more of those damn points But I think cool driving would be beter for my carputer than my old sport style

My Problem is that I'm driving quite much ( about 30.000 Km/ Year ) and I already got 3 Points this year danm Year 2002 - It's not a lucky year for me !-

Last Friday I asked on my repair service to ask how the law is concerning modifying console etc . The guy they asked wasn't very interested . So I think no prob - I'll see Depending on the next car I'll buy I'll do some mods to console or not .

For me November is for buying new car ( because I'll have to live without my license in November - I need it before and after)

              Felix :-)

                Radar / Speed trap jammming.

OK guys, regarding the idea of mountig a few IR diodes to irritate a CCD video camera. It doesn't work. My father was a police officer and we did some "tests" regarding such devices. Nothing worked. No blinding (IR or UV)lights, no flashlights, distortion foils on the licence plate, no radar warner.
The only working thing was a radar jammer which sends a "empty carrier" on the exact frequency the police radar works (the radar cant get a clear reflection from the car). But as there are different models in use, you would need several transmitters on different frequencies. Getting info on this frequencies is possible but i dont know a relieable source.
I know that the german (and austrian) police has special equipment/officers to deal with photos and videos of manipulated licence plates. Manipulating is mainly done by the use of special distorsion foils, which reflect a most of the flashlight if your photograph was taken. It is pretty simple to find the licence number by using photoshop et al (just a contrast adjustment). If you are caught doing this, you are charged with speeding AND counterfeiting/manipulating a official document (the licence plate). And this gets really expensive.

So: Save the time and money for the IR diodes; it won't work.

Ouch, I guess I'll have to be more careful on the german roads... I didn't think much of the speed limits. Do you know what the fines are for tourists? We rented a BMW 525i last weekend and of course had to test it out on the "autobahn". We were going 240 km/h between Mannhiem and Stuttgart, but this was on a section of road that didn't have any speed limit... or at least we hoped so. Everyone was driving pretty fast, but people were clearing the path as soon as they saw the beamer lights coming. But there was a lot of traffic on some roads, so we had to drive at a reasonable speed most of the trip.

Then we drove through all of switzerland thinking that the signs with the speed limit in black and the black slashes going through the speed limit meant you could go as fast as you liked. So of course everytime I saw one of those, it meant 'go faster'.
The swiss roads were very fun to drive on though as long as there wasn't much traffic. I tried to keep at the posted speed as best as possible... hehe, but the car didn't like going that slow.

I only found out that switzerland had a 130km/h nationwide speed limit once I got back to school in Metz. I just hope that those cameras didn't catch us going 240.

I finally got hassled by the police over my screen. Conversation went something like.
Me and a friend rolled up to a parking spot at bowling alley let the EGT's fall
We get out of the car There's a cop waiting.
He says something like"Son it is Illegal to have any display in the drivers field of view"
Me "It is used for Navigational purposes it is Legal in Louisiana" (True)
Cop "No, it is illegal to have any display in the drivers field of view"
BMW mechanic/ 383 Friend " Tell that to all of the 745i drivers"
Cop "Don't get get smart with me son, the law is clear it is illegal to have ANY display in the drivers field of view"
I lock the doors and start walking inside.
Cop stops us says " You know what I aughta do? Us (shake heads) Cop:Bring you in for that Illegal Radar device AND that Illegal display, but since I'm a nice guy I'll only issue a warning"
                      We walk off
Note Radar detector are legal in Louisiana on non commercial vehicles.
Moron Cop. I really felt like telling him to write me a ticket for both so I could bring him to court and make sure everyone realized what an idiot he is

I have been pulled over before in Chicago, IL (US) and this is how the story went.

He asked me what the screen does. I told him that it is connected to a RearView Camera and GPS which in connected to the computer. I also had my camera and microphone in the car and I told the officer that he is being recorded on the computer. He was taken aback and he asked if I can watch movies. I told him I can only if the hand brake is on. He let me off very quickly. Police do not like being recorded.

Wow. Old thread come back to life.

I've driven right past cops before with the thing and I've yet to be hassled. I've even filled up my gas tank with the system on and a couple of cops sitting across the pumps and they didn't even notice.

I guess in a city, cops have better things to be doing then busting people for a screen. Especialy in Boston, as recently the police got sued for racial discrimination because someone got pulled over and tickeded 3 times for "driving with obstructed vision" when he had an air freshener hanging from his rear view mirror.

I have had 3 people stop me and ask "what's that on your dash?" though.

Yeah I was going to start an new thread but I figured that I would just search for the old one.

I have shown it to LOTS of cop friends none of them ever said anything about it being illegal and plenty want me to build one for them. I've been approached by plenty of cops at gas stations that just wanted to see it and though it was cool never mentioning the law.
I could be ticketed for obstructed vision and wouldn't be surprised. My EGT + boost gage block part of my left vision (pillar pod) my Radar detector is directly below the rear view mirror partially blocking my view of low flying aircraft, and my screen obscures my view of my dash and most of the hood on the passengers side.
I'd say I get 5~10 people per day who ask what that screen on my dash does.
