  • 17" Touchscreen Install In 02 Civic

I just won a bid on ebay for a 17" touchscreen for $150.
I really want to build a carputer and utilize this awesome monitor in the car! I know it's over the top, but I'm am going to find a way to put it in.

    here's the monitor:

and the ebay site where I won it:
    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...MEWN:IT&ih=012

THere are some awesome DIY reports on this website but if anyone has any suggestions for how to excecute a proper 17" touchscreen install in my 02 civic, I'd be much abbliged.

I'm plannin on pullin out my entire front pannel on my dash where the radio is as well as the surround plastic piece that holds the A/C vents and controls. I'll cut off the vents at that location.

take a look at this pic if you want to see what I'm talking about on the dash:

Except that instead of that dinky 8" lilliput monitor, there would be a monsterous 17" TOUCHSCREEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

anyway... I'll prolly spend another $1000 or so on the computer itself and just put it in a box in the trunk with the DVD/CD ROM wired all the way up front under the dash piece.

It looks *****in awesome in my head, now I gotta make this ***** happen.

Anyone have any advise from how to hook up the montor computer and sound to where would be the best placement for the wires. Lets here it.

I was even thinkin of making the monitor removable while driving and remaining on, perhaps supported by a telescopic arm or foldable arm array that would enable the monitor to be snapped out and pulled futher into the cabbin.

17" inches, can you IMAGINE???????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! its sick

Honestly, its not for me. I think smaller screens look better when they are sleek and sexy, but thats only my opinion. Are you sure that thing will fit in there even with all that gone? You going to relocate all that stuff, including the vents I hope? If you just block them, you'll throw the balance of the hvac system off and that system in that car is unbalanced as it is. Also, note, your blinkers won't work without the hazard switch connected....
Its not the cards you're dealt, its how you play the hand!

I have an accord and it was tough finding a place for 7 inch. I dont know what you are going to do with it exactly. It may be best to make it into a tablet and mount it to the dash when you want it out on a bracket. You might also invest in some way to easily control the brightness too. That will be a lot of light in your face at night.

If you want to integrate it, take some interior pictures with some measurements and repost. Its not going to be easy.

I am putting a 15" in my f250 but i built a center console that goes from the dash all the way to the rear seat. A 17" MIGHT be able to fit in a dash but it would take alot of work, fiberglass and what not. Good luck

Good for you for going all out

In my opinion it may be slightly over the top.

Very interested to see how it goes.

you may have to rotate the monitor 90 degrees to get it too fit.... in that case, you'll have to make your own skin that is oriented as such...

yeah, I have a 12.1" in portrait mode, only way it would fit ... skins can be an issue but not too hard to deal with really...

did you measure? if it is physically larger than the bezel then you will have to cut into the dash pad itself.... that can take some real tricky & labor intensive work to pull off...

I woulda recommended measuring the bezel to see how large you can go without extending outside it's boundaries... personally that looks like a 10.4" or maybe even a 12.1" at most.... anything bigger will require major cutting & a much bigger job of trying to get it to look finished rather than butchered...

sideways in portrait mode you might be able to stay within the left & right boundaries of the bezel... just extending it lower is not too hard really, but crossing these side boundaries are asking for trouble unless your some master fabricator or know bodywork & fabrication at least...

in the end, you've got like a 97.5% chance of it looking ghetto & tacky & having most who see it laugh at it rather than being impressed with it...

of course this means there is still a small chance you actually could pull it off, & do an over the top huge screen install well enough that it actually is impressive, of course that's far from impossible, if you really think you'll be able to then go for it...,

I still think you'd get better results with a 10.4" or 12.1".... when you get that screen & hold it up to your dash, then you'll see....

The civic's center console is small. And the black part that fits a 7" nicely is relatively flat, but the rest is curvy. The top goes at an extreme angle fast to the part below the windshield and the bottom goes to cupholders which curves in. To make it fit, you might have to recess it due to the physical limitations of the civic console. The 2001 through 2005 are the same basically. Also there are 4 groups of big connectors going to those buttons. The aircon/defrost/air circulation on 1 group, hazard on another and the other two are for the fan/temp/blowers. They are just big enough to reach. You will have a lot of work to extend those and the car wont work without them.

Also behind the dash there is a ton of wiring in a big black hose, and it is almost impossible to move that thing. Then if your car has the immobilizer (which I think they all do) a big black box juts out. And the cup holder area and the hu area are seperated by a big metal bar. I am pretty sure that removing that would have bad consequences. I think unless you go up from the console into the windshield area in portrait mode, it won't fit. And that could look really weird. An 8" screen would involve relocating the hvac controls.

And as you are probably aware, the 7th gen civics (expecially with sunroofs) have the worste sun washout problem. Even the instrument cluster can become washed out because of the sun. That little area where the radio goes, seems to be perfectly shielded due to the angle it is at with respect to the space between windshield and sunroof and then the angle of the rearwindow. So it gets a lot less glare. With a 17", you might have sun really unreadable areas except for the centre. You might want to think about getting a transflective treatment.

And for the computer, if you are going to do a nice 17" screen fab, don't just through the computer in a box. Start strong and ending weak is no good. Get a nice setup for that.

I am looking forwards to see how it turns out. You will probably want spare dash parts so you can get it right and revert back if you screw up, and I found this site to ship fast and have competetive prices: http://www.hondapartsunlimited.com

You will probably just need the top dash part that goes all the way across the car (to relocate the vents and maybe extend a bubble for the monitor) and then the lower centre console because a 17" is bigger than the entire upper centre console part (where the hu is now) so no need buying that because you wont even be touching it. Lots and lots of work and money spending is in your future, and I hope it works out for you.

yeah, the first step really would be removing the whole dash from the car & then major fabrication... you could rebuild the whole center of the dash in fiberglass & then have the whole dash wrapped or even painted if you like that look... then you'll have to redo everything around it & relocate stuff & then build your own bezels to finish it off.....

I think a deep recess in portrait mode could be done, I don't know if you have any idea what kind of work that would take though...

Yeah, a recess will be needed to make it flush-like.

But the problem remains with the crowded behind dash area. I originally planned on putting my entire pc back there, but as soon as I took off that bezel and looked, I was like "screw that". I am not sure if you have seen back there before, but it is a mess. Lots of metal support and wires running everywhere. It seems like it was where they randomly decided to stick everything! Right there. And the vents seem like they would be a big pain to reroute... Maybe kumanan or whatever his name is could help/ give suggestions with the fiberglass because he did create a complete custom dash (like you will have to do) with it.

what about this? won't need much internal modifications... I bet a 17" screen is even larger than this though... this might be a 15"

good news is if you bought a working 17" touchscreen it should be worth enough that you can sell it and buy a real nice 12" or something. The price of $150 for that screen is also of concern. I hope it is in perfect working order with a controller board...

Looking at turbo's pic there, if THATS smaller than 17" then I have no doubt you will crash if you put the 17" in. People are gonn think you're blind. I really can't see where the 17" will be any more useful than a 15 or a 12.. Thats just me.
