  • 2 questions about the Xenarc display (that havent been asked b4 ;)

    1. Color depth? I havent seen that spec anywhere. Is this 256 colors or 32-bit I would think it would be atleast 18-bit though. What depth are regular composite screens generally?

    2. In the original group buy thread, vickumar brought up and intresting question.

i have a feeling all this lcd has is an internal scan converter...

if this was true... it wouldnt exactly be like a true vga flatscreen lcd monitor...

$525 is a large gamble on a relatively new and "untested" piece of hardware.... unless someone has actual evidence about its clarity...
Now I do not want to discourage anyone at all. I just want to know if this is a regular 7" screen with a scan converter or an actual vga controller before I dish out the cash on it Thanks!

The fact that it's easy to unload, is worth 'the gamble'. You can always get rid of it on E-Bay and you probably wont lose anything more than the time to plug it in, curse like a madman, and sell it.

CNG1 did a review of it in this thread.

Hmm well after reading that thread, I am pretty sure that a scan converter is used, simply because the 640x480 mode is "streched" (ie exactly what a scan converter would do on a any other composite screen). A controller would not need to strech the image. Additionally, the price upgrade of only $30 to go from VGA only to VGA + 3 rca in indicates this. I dont think you would get a vga controller + an entirely new composite controller for only $30. It must be a 4 channel composite, and channel one has a scan converter before it. But its still a nice package none-the-less. If only the regular composite (running around $270 on the spysupply page) came with a touch version, you could buy that, get a scan converter on your own, and save $100-$150 hehe. But perhaps im wrong!

I believe you are wrong. The screens native resolution is 800X480. This is a widescreen resolution. Aside from streching the image across pixels how would you propose to get a 640x480 image to work on a 800x480 monitor?

Like I said, I could be wrong. I did not think of that. But you could just show the 640x480 unstrecthed by placing black bars on the side :P

Im torn between buying another dennisk setup (I sold my last one) and buying this screen!

DennisK: $295 shipped, but without touch cable (another $50 from allamerican, so total of $345)

Xenarc: 1" smaller (bad), but brighter (250 nits compared to 150 nits), $xxx shipped, complete setup, nothing additional to buy.

Price difference ~$130+ (in that ballpark area, because Im not supposed to post the price of the Xenarc here lol, so thats not precicely the difference, but it is substantially more!). If the Xenarc was 8.4" I wouldnt even have to think about it! *confused* Anyone have any suggestions?

Only thing I can suggest is that you PM CNG1 and ask him what he thinks about his. I know which I'm getting.

Couldn't you just email xenarc and see what they have to say? Sure, they might not be willing to divulge too much, but on the other hand, you never know. And I can't speak about this specific case, but with many things, the $30 more extra features (ie, raid on a motherboard) are already there in silicone, and just need the physical outs added, or a chip dropped onto its soder pads. And you can run 640x480 on a screen with a physical resolution of 800x480, or run 800x480 on a 640x480 screen. And the fact that someone listed the screen as having 800x480 pxiels would lead me to believe that it truely is a vga screen, as most composite lcds have a lot fewer pixels.
