  • Anyone ever hack GM's HUD?

One of the electrical engineers here just put this idea into my head. Anyone ever try? I'm thinking about scouring junk yards looking for one.

More random thoughts sure to come....

Finally found the old threads on here of people talking about this, or similar ideas. Doesn't look like anything ever really happened with it. May decide to play with this idea when I get back from Costa Rica next month.

        Hud

What is the foundation behind how this concept works? Is it just light projected at a certain angle on the dash to reflect ito the drivers field of view? Or does the window have a special film on it in the area where the projection occurs?

A friend of mine had a corvette with this. It had a film on the windshield, and a very bright VFD looking (but likely LED backlight) screen in the dash so you essentially looked at the reflection of it in the windshield. It was very slick.

it can work for low resolution 1,2,3 color display, high contrast type stuff like simple images numbers or text. if your looking to do a high resolution high color display then I'd say give it up. it'll never look anywhere near as good as directly viewing a screen & to get it good enough to be useful your defeating the whole purpose of a hid to begin with... I spent a lot of time playing with it & winded up converting it to a pop up screen, just makes much more sense..., especially since your going to have to chop up your dash anyway...

simple display like gages or navigation type prompts in a single color would be really nice... what are you thinking of doing?

The OEM windshields do have a film but if you install a HUD on a non-film windshield you will still be able to see it, you might just have a second ghost image.

There is quite the handful of GM cars that have had HUD.(Dating back to '92) Although a HUD from a newer vehicle will give you the chance for extra information to be displayed.

I know HUDs have to be monochrome or so, I was thinking of adding the base functions of speed compass, gps turn alert kind of thing. I tend to leave GPS muted, not that I can't see the 8" screen change out of the corner of my idea. Just exploring the idea I guess.

The future will be transparent screens and solar powred OLED's that simply turn on or off with data.

This would be really nice. Even if you have to put a light square of window tint. I really want to do G force, acel and brake on my window like the vett.

I've hacked it a bit. I have a vette HUD running in my silverado.. it's not installed though because it's massive!

They are LED backlight as others were guessing.
