  • Speedometer Replacement?

Has anyone ever tried to do a full speedo replacement? (like an LCD where the guages are currently located)?

I've been getting this ich to to a full glass cockpit in a car (LCD speedo/LCD center console), and was wondering if anyone has pulled this of yet, or if not, why?

a couple of reasons tyhe biggest 2 being reliablity, and legality...

from what i have read(which isn't much), most of the systems/software to do it is still windows based-- and windows isn't the most reliable platform to entrust your cars vitals to(i keep spare loaded hdd's for my carputer, and i just play music )...

then there is the legal issues of having a screen in front of the driver-- in some states, the wording of the law would make a lcd speedo a easy target. the laws are usually worded like "no screens should be visible to the driver of the car"... so it depends on how much you **** the cop off . then there is also the legal issue if something were to happen to the screen--"sorry, officer, my speedo screen went dead, and so i didn't realize i was doing 60 in a 45..."

Not ready to start on it yet but an Arduino TouchShield is probably what I'll try out first.

I have been pondering this ida myself, and found it to be rubish.

There's no way to get the gauges via ODB be as good as the originals. From all videos I've seen where there is speedo and RPM, or just one of the two... they are lagish, and you get real high pikes from time to time... Like 25k in RPM on a regular combustion engine and not a Wankel.

You can still high jack the original signals, and do what ever needed to be done with them.. But still, I would not recomend doing so.

Another way of doing this is to hack the wires off your guages and relocate them in your boot/trunk, in a box with a camera facing them.

I've seen this done, and it works real time, and is as accurate as your original guages. Plus you can use the monitor to display other things such as reverse camera, without having to mash up your dash.

I have always wanted a combo of the two... I like the look of a LCD gauge cluster but dont trust them like everyone else has said. Even if I ran linux I wouldnt trust it...

The one thought I keep going make to tint the gauge cluster glass and wire the cluster lights to come on with the key... Thus when key is turned on the blacked out cluster will shine through... Again its just a thought no real world testing to see if that will work. Might have to change the gauges to something brighter and digital. Who knows...

Edit: Hmm with the space between the gauges and the glass one could pull off some neat lighting tricks...

NOTE: I know I wrote glass, but what I mean is that clear plastic piece to prevent a dishonest person from rolling back the od..

It would be sweet to have a setup like the MR2 I've dreamed about a few times

But yea, stability would be a huge issue

This is much like my first inspiration for CarPC.
The StarTrek car. I cannot find it anymore.. But it where the very first car I have seen, that had a computer in it.. and it where built like it where taken out of star trek... Even had custom paint job, and the signature of the main cast of the show.
Where built on a Camaro or Firebird if I'm not mistaken.

OMG! the MR2 is everything I was thinking of and more.
Not exactly how I would do it style-wise but definitly the concept I was going for.
I still got weigh this to see if I take it on...

At first glance I thought that this was a joke. People have really done this? I mean, don't get me wrong, I can see reasons and benefits to this setup, but it seems like a lot of complication and monkey business to achieve little more than one initially had.
