  • Removable / Detachable Double DIN Touch Screen

    Hi

I'd like to build a carputer in my polo 9n, but I'm having trouble choosing a screen. I'd like something to fit in the double DIN space, but I'm worried some idiot will smash my windows and try to steal it thinking he's getting some kind of in-dash DVD player thing. It there a double din touchscreen that comes in some kind of frame or housing that it can be detached from? I've been looking a while but I can't find anything all the DVD/sat nav double DIN solutions have removable screens. Why can I not find just a removable screen?

    Thanks
    Daniel

because there are no solutions like that for vga screens..

you might be able to make your own quick realease system to allow you to remove the monitor..

but it's such an obvious thing to make! has anyone ever tried to make a release system for a screen like this before? The problem is i'd need to somehow make a connector that would join the VGA and USB from the screen to the frame which would then connect to the PC. I have no idea how to do either of the 2. Any ideas?

obvious is relative-- my monitor looks almost like a cheap fake screen when not turned on(the bybyte kit, imo, really adds to the cheap look, but i like it that way-- less chance that it looks like it is worthwhile to steal)-- it looks out of place, but only if you look hard at it..

lilliput monitors combines the 2 into a cable that is 'kind-of' quick release.

the closest link i could find-
        http://www.geek.com/xyzimages/storie...t/lilli_08.jpg

the white connector plugs into the back of the monitor(kind of like a ipod charger-- where you squeeze the sides to release it), and the black, s-video-looking connector on that white connector is where the usb/vga cord connects, and then locks on.

after thinking about it a little more, i think that there are a bunch of installs where theft was a concern-- so the monitor was mounted on the included stand, and then removed when not in use-- kind of like a portable gps unit..

I could mount it on the dash and have it removable like that, but i'm fussy and i'd forever be wishing I did an oem like job. that, and in the polo the double din is the perfect location for a screen, can easily see and reach it and it's at the right angle :s my other idea was to get a motorised single din touch screen and attach the front cover of din cup holders so it would look innocent when away, but all the cup holders I've found only cover half the din socket, the other half is just space to store things. And even if it covered the entire space, the front would have to go right to the edge of the din socket to hide that there was something else behind it, or it would look odd with space round the edge... I really need someone with a broken one to sell so I can rip the front off anyway...

also, there are headrest touchscreen monitors I could use, as they tend to be detachable, but I can't seem to find one without a cable to unplug, none like the all-in-one solutions with removable screens

Lol, I was just thinking of adding that-- you can try to search eBay for some absolutly dreadful looking dd radios-- I don't think that it needs to look like the original-- as long as it looks horrible, thieves won't touch it

Ok, maybe I am thinking of something else-- install the touch screen, but then cut up a ugly radio so that it creates a fake cover for when you park-- cause no one wants to steal a million year old radio..

thought of that too, but i'd need a double din radio and a way of securing it in front of the screen :s

heres a link to a thread discussing that, with another link in it to anotehr thread also discussing it-- it is relatively simple, but can be effective:

I think that may be the best idea. I can use VW units too. only problem is I can't find any broken ones, so it will cost a bit :s any idea about making it into a door? a few people mentioned it, but no one seems to have done it
