  • VM70 vs Mini Touch 700 vs other decent monitor?

    Hi,

Which screen would be better between the VM70 and Mini touch 700? Alternatively, are there other decent monitors around the same price range? Will be using VGA.

    http://short-circuit.com/product/VM70.html
    $125

    http://www.mo-co-so.com/Mini-Touch-7...mcs-mt-700.htm
    $140

Performance is not my main concern. I am trying to find a good price/quality ratio.

    Thanks in advance.

I am a huge fan of the VM70 screens. What is nice about them are all the things that come with them. Desktop stand, plug, cables, and the part that sold me, the headrest shroud to put the screen into the back seats. The company that sells the screens if very big on customer service. So if you have problems, an email to them will be answered usually with in a few hours or less. The screen is comparable to the Lilliput EBY701, but has a better on screen GUI, in my opinion. The screen is built very solid, its easy to understand and you cant best the price. In most cases cheap = bad, but not this screen, its most def a good buy. I plan on buying m ore to finish out all my seats. Only con I see is that this is a CCFL screen. They do have a LED model which costs maybe a few dollars less then the mini-touch.

Ok, I just took a look at the link for the screen from mo-co-so. It looks like its a rebadged VM70. Only difference is one is a bit more in price. I think short circuit has free shipping. What ever screen you go with, you can't loose because both companies are great with customer service.

        Mini Touch
        450nits brightness
        500:1 Contrast
        LED backlighting
        Auto-power on

        VM70
        300nits brightness
        250:1 contrast
        CFL backlighting

I would go for as bright as possible if you are not looking at dropping big bucks on trans-reflective. IMO, it's well worth it to spend the ~extra $20 to get the mini-touch based on higher brightness and LED backlighting, especially if you live in a climate that sees variations in temperatures.

The mini-touch also comes with a headrest shroud.

Are you sure those ratings are right? Unless Mo-Co-So is using the wrong picture :-(. If you are using this for the rear seats, then brightness doesnt matter to much. My truck has dark tints, with limo tints going in later.

Thanks all. I'll be using it in the center dash. Where would be the best place to get it?

Looks like these both come with the headrest shroud. Can anyone comment on how the display secures to this? I ask because I'm doing a Jeep Wrangler (which has no doors or windows of any kind spring thru fall) carputer install and I was thinking I could mold the shroud into my dash, as to have a custom install, while maintaining the ability to remove the screen (I'd probably only put it in for long trips, ie, offraoding/camping trips a couple times per month)

The shroud for the mini touch locks it in TIGHT. You have to put alot or pressure on the rear panel to get it out.

Interesting! Security is such an issue. Most stuff I can put in my aftermarket security glovebox and console but items like touchscreen (even if its fully molded into the dash - still an issue), dashcam and CB are always thief magnets! Maybe I should think about doing a recessed display with a magnetic/pop-on "blank" that covers it... Anyway, thanks for the info!!

So, the VM70 does indeed come with a headrest/flush mount bezel? I would like to have something to integrate into dash to get a clean look with minimal modding.

It does have a flush mount headrest bezel.

I have the VM70 in my front dash. The touchscreen doesn't like cold temps until the screen warms up a bit. It is not bright enough to overcome bright sun.

I have ordered the next model up with the LED backlighting. It should prove better for viewing. The current one will go into a headrest in the back where less sunlight makes it onto the screen.

However, as a monitor it is definitely satisfactory. Any resistive screen will be affected by temperature, just more or less depending on quality.

You know I have a VM70 also, had plans on buying 6 more. I have never tested mine in the Florida sunlight. I think for the rear screens (windows have black tint) these will work. Maybe I should buy the V70-XB for the front dash screens. I plan on doing a tri-cluster in my dash and I would hate for all 3 screens to be unreadable. Only thing I wonder is does this screen have the same dimesions as the VM70 so I can easily swap screens if I decide to upgrade the rear?
