    Hi, car gurus. Recently I had an idea sprung into my mind like paranoid, so I was wondering if somebody could convince me why it is not worth trying to implement. The idea is basically is to project an image onto the windshield (yeah, the lens should be specifically calculated and produced, I'm aware of that) as shown in the picture:

    later model Corvettes do this for their speedometer, combining a high output screen with a semi-reflective transparent sticker on the windshield Your image attachment is not showing though, so I'm not sure if that's close to what you're looking at, but you can do it with a VFD for simple text fairly easily.

      The repost of the image:

      Actually I've understood what's wrong on my own already: the image should be collimated to be focused at infinity, which won't be the case with windshield reflection.

        Proving the re-invention of the wheel, and how the internet fails to inform us...

        Good idea, but not new.
        Long implemented in aircraft.
        Limited hobbyist implementation in vehicles. (Speedos & tachos etc are often done with ordinary 7-segment LEDs (after swapping b-c & f-e segments, and maybe adding a sticky label to limit dual-reflections).)

        Infinite focus has been done though I haven't seen it on public forums (like this...). Occasionally done in conjunction eyeball tracking.


        PS (after Soundman's reply below - agreeing that (infinite) focus usually isn't required) - zonal or range focus (which is usually limited to 10m/30' virual) has more application or use than infinite focus.

          many times, just putting a screen on top of the dash-- without a focusing lens+special backlight will get a basic HUD.

          focus usually isn't required.. many cars with HUD use a reflective 'square' in the area for the HUD info. this is done for 3 reasons.


          1. to prevent a double-image. glass on common cars is multiple laminates of material, so just reflecting a image of raw automotive windshield glass will result in multiple reflections coming from the different layers of glass.

          2. to make it easier to see the image in all conditions.

          3. in the cars i have driven with HUD, i find that the reflective area makes it easier to locate the HUD info-- without it, the reflection can be harder to see, and refocus your eyes to see briefly.

            Hey guys what about using something like a pico laser projector similar to this http://www.microvision.com/showwx/specs.html aimed at the transparent sticker?

              Here is a HUD add-on using OBDII, but it wasn't clear if this was for vehicle info or something else.

              Anyone know where to source the transparent "reflective sticker"? Is it anything special?

                I don't pretend having invented something, just trying to adapt existing technology for my own ease. I'm a programmer after all, not engineer.

                That's too limited. I want augmented image, if I wanted sensors I'd go with an LCD screen because I have to refocus my eyes and change the view axis anyway to read from such HUDs.

                Yeah, read a lot about it yesterday and there's a lot of publically available info on that matter, mostly concerning plane HUDs.

                I'm already convinced that doing HUD on a full windshield is a really bad design, so I came up with another idea:

                All the components are easy to manufacture/buy, should probably work well, but I'm concerned about eyeball movement and light intensivity.

                  x2 on the pico projector thingy. Kinda cool to see album art, nav, or even video calls on my windshield.

                    i think it is similar to tinting film. there was a really long thread on HUD's and i remember it was talked about there, but i can't seem to locate the thread..

                    the pico laser projector has been brought up, but no one has really taken it much farther.. the downside to the projector design is that you would need to hack up your dash more to allow the light to spread out to a acceptable image size--the upside to the laser projector is that it would always be in focus..

                    a lcd screen is already the correct size, so there is less mounting requirements..

                      Well, eh, I'm rather trying to adapt the simple version of existing tech, instead of pretending having invented something on my own.

                      There's too much limitations to this approach. What I want is augmented reality rather. Say, like blend the navigator and cameras (thermal, rear view when looking back) into the actual picture into an augmented reality system. I don't really care about the sensors, they would distract too much.

                      Without eyeball problem, there's a lot of pulically available solutions for aircrafts, got a lot of them today.

                      Dunno, it's probably easier to collimate the rays and make an infinite focus image, and besides anything further 10-20m is pretty much an infinity for eyes, am I not right?

                      Got another idea though, leaving behind the visibility to others and focus problems. Picture related:

                      Still I have little worries about eyeball movement and if I would fry my eyes out with this contraption. But overally seems easy and cheap to implement.

                        if you have a smartphone, why don't you just try putting it on your dash facing the windshield. it'll be a quick test and easily implemented if it worked.

                        if it does work then you have a bunch of options out there for relatively inexpensive 4.3" screens.

                        the trick is to reverse the image though.
