  • How do I supply voltage to LCD module?

I'm trying to hook a 24x2 LCD character module to my computer through the parallel port. Right now I am supplying the +5V DC voltage via an external power supply that I have available. Will this work, or does the +5V need to be supplied from the computer itself so the Grounds are at the same potential?

Let me know if anyone has tried using an external supply before.

    Thanks, Scott

the grounds need to be common anyways for signals
I can see using a separate supply for the backlight only
but why not power from the computer?

I'm just doing it this way for testing purposes, because I'm not sure I will be using the LCD module with the computer. But now that I think about it, the grounds should be common anyway as both my standalone power supply and the computer are both grounded through the wall socket.
