  • Lilliput 8.4" Arrived! Nice.

I bought one of those new 8.4" Lilliput Touchscreens from Electronicar on Ebay. It arrived yesterday (Saturday). It is really pretty nice. The install to my Cappacino PC was flawless and the touchscreen interface (USB, 4-wire resistive) works wonderfully. The only flaw that I perceive is the LCD is not mounted in the center of the case opening and is shifted slightly to the left. No big deal. It is a tiny bit grainier than I was expecting (compared to my Dell laptop), but I think its because I am looking through the touchscreen.

    Some details:

I ordered it about 2 weeks ago, but received no ship information after about 4 days. It was almost at the time of the Chinese New Year so I expected delays. I sent Electronicar an email after a few days and he sent me a note back saying the technicians had found some bad pixels and were inspecting each unit prior to shipping. I got an email from Electronicar on Wednesday 2/11 with the tracking number and 4 days later it arrived in South Carolina.

The only gripe I have is that I paid for a headrest mount and it was not included ($9.00). I'm going to try to resolve this (refund).

Details of the device: I can get it to operate in resolutions from 800x600 up through 1280x1024. It is a 4:3 screen ratio. The brightness seems very good. The interface cable is a specialty connector that I can't identify, shown correctly in the Ebay pictures. There are several 8" pigtails off of this connector: RCA plugs, 12V power plug, S-video input, and a round DIN plug. Another approx 4 foot cable is supplied which is DIN on one end and VGA/USB on the other. I think you'll have to be careful not to put too much side force on the connector at the monitor itself. That looks like a weak point to me.

I got worried when I first opened the package because it was in the box for the 7" 16:9 monitor. But, I had the right one. The package also included the touchscreen software, software for pivoting the screen (really cool...you can pivot the screen and use it in Portrait orientation), a 120V ac adapter, and a cigarette light adapter that is marked 12-16V in, 12V out. There is also a small stand and a remote control.

The image quality is really pretty good, and there is no evidence it is a used LCD. No Jurassic Park, no scratches, no dead pixels.

If you want a 8" 4:3 monitor for PC Use, this would be worth looking at.

Its going to be a busy week, but if I get a chance, I'll try to get some pictures up.

If you get a chance please give all demensions. I have been looking (starring) at that ebay page trying to decide between the 8" and 7". Cant tell if i will have the room. Plus your the first i have read about that got the 8". I think i might be leaning towards the 8" now that i know more about it. Thanks for all the info you gave.

                  Dimensions, Pictures, and etc.

                  Here are the dimensions:

Outside dimensions of case: 8" wide by 6.5" high by 1 5/8" deep. (203mm by 165mm by 41.3 mm)

Screen dimensions (visible portion....approx the same size as the opening): 6 7/16" wide by 4 13/16" high (163.5mm by 122mm) The screen measures 8" (203mm)diagonal (not 8.4").

The pictures on Electronicar's Ebay website are exactly like what I got. I took a few quick pictures of the connector on the bottom, the "pigtail" with the DIN plug, RCA jacks, S-video, and power input, and a screen shot with my WxWorx weather radar program on it (XM Radio). That's my primary purpose of the screen. The resolution is 800 by 600 at 85 Hz on this picture. It was taken without the flash with ambient incandescent lighting in my home.

I don't have any problems with reflections, glare, or brightness. My only gripe (small) is that the LCD is not exactly centered with the case opening. And no, I'm not going to open the case to fix it.

I did have some sort of conflict on between the touchscreen mouse, my WxWorx receiver (uses a USB virtual com port), and my USB GPS receiver (a Holux which also uses a virtual com port). The mouse pointer was jumping all around the screen. But the touchscreen still worked ok. A reboot and replugging in the USB devices resolved it. Still not sure why it happened.

The DIN plug has 9 pins. And, it doesn't make the best connection. I've had to wiggle it a couple of times.

The cost? It was $329USD plus shipping, just like on the Ebay web site. So far, nothing from customs. Electronicar told me that I wouldn't be charged a customs fee. We'll see.....

Sorry the files size of the pictures is so big. I didn't have much time to play with the resolution.

                  Hope that helps.

do you have pictures with your laptop setup? Also, did you use the actual laptop to run it, or just the screen. IF just the screen, how did you set this up?

                          Looks good

I wish they'ed had put the connectors on the 7in on the bottom as the USB style input for the V1/V2 is on the side. Had to make a right angled USB connector to fit it into my Celica GTS dash as only had 10mm spare and std USB plugs are so damn long for no reason whatsoever.
