  • Using two touch screens for two different apps?

    Hi guys,

I'm planning to use two touch screens for my carputer. I want one dedicated for GPS, and the other for everything else. Basically, when watching a film or whatever, I ALWAYS want to be able to see where I am via GPS.

Does anyone know if this is possible, and any possible conflicts it may cause. I did search (before you all start posting the icon), but all the threads I managed to find (using the word dual, two isn't liked 'cos it's too short ) seemed to relate to both screens displaying the exact same content (therefore it's two mice on the same screen), whereas mine is two mice on two separate displays. Obviously I realise I'll need a second graphics card to power the second monitor, but if anyone could give me any information on this I'd be grateful.

How do the two monitors work anyway, is it like one LONG desktop? What if I wanted one 10" (mounted in front of the passenger) for DVDs running at a high res, and the other is a 7" (mounted in the dash DIN slot). Will the different resolutions cause any problems?

I also plan to use two normal screens in the back too. These are primarily for media, so they'll display whatever the main screen is displaying, but I would like (for the sake of versitility) if they could also display what's on the second screen (GPS) too.

    Thanks

I'm not sure if this helps any but, I remember reading something awhile ago about this new computer that acts like two computers in one. The basic idea is there is one computer with two monitors, two keyboards and two mice. One user could be doing something while the other user could be doing something entirely different. It was kinda cool, but i can't seem to be able to find anything on it now. Well if anyone knows what i'm talking about please post a link or something. Let me know if im going crazy or not lol.

SGI has had this option for years now (PowerDuo Octane) but it looks like the technology is making it's way into the PC market to save hardware/software cost. Here's a link that might be what you're looking for http://www.adfast.com.tw/easys.htm

With this kind of set up, I need a main 'server' PC, and then two dummy PC's, so three in total. Who's got room for that in their car?

Thanks for the link, but I already read that thread and was aware beforehand that you can run multiple monitors off a single machine. My point was doing this with touch screens though, and whether the two mice (for the touch screen element) will present any problems over their own portions of the desktop. If I was to take an educated guess, I'd think that the PC would see the two mice and respond to which ever is moving. Therefore if I tapped at something on any screen, the PC would just assume the mouse got there and clicked - no problem. But this is just theory, if anyone has any more information I'd appreciate reading it.

Thanks, but I'm not trying to split a single signal, so the splitters arn't what I'm looking for.

Not quite My question is more focused on how the touchscreens will react being as they both represent mice too

You are going to want a dual-head (heh heh I said 'dual') video card. pretty much every manufacturer has it. Under Win XP it is really easy to set up and it allows you to use multiple monitors. You can only use one mouse and one keyboard.

So what would happen if I had two mice (ala the two touch screens), or even three mice (might have a touch pad set in the door or something )

i've tried what you want and the touchscreen/mouse worked only for the default monitor!!!!
You firstly have to drag the mouse to the second monitor to work!!!!
it seems to be more complicated!!!
I want the same feature too!!!

But surely if you 'touch' the second monitor, the OS should realise that's where a mouse is being dragged/clicked? No?

                        You can try this :

                        http://www.thinsoftinc.com/products_buddy_info.html

See the specs of the premium model. It accepts USB k/b and mouse (your tsk here ) for the client PC.

I just hope that you don't have a M10000; it would be a tight fit!!!

                        Hope this helps...

to be safe, I would buy a duel monitor video card install it on your home computer, then plug the touchscreen up to the home computer, this is if the screen is easy to remove from your car, now have your mouse on your normal screen and then press one of the buttons on the touch screen, if this works then more then likely it will work with two touch screens if it doesnt work, then your going to need to find away around it. running two touch screens would be nice. also I think someone already posted this but if not then yes you can view two diff. programs on two diff. screens, that is with XP, I had a friend that did it on 98 but I dont remember how.

I may be mistaken, but I tought that I read something on the touchscreen configuration software that comes with the lilliput (dont have mine handy, maybe someone will chime in with the name), it actually has a setting to use more than 1 touchscreen monitor interface, I believe the "action" follow the monitor being touched. The software worked with USB and serial so I believed it be a generic "touchscreen" driver.

Sorry I dont have the name handy, but with all the lilliputs on this forum, Im sure someone has the info..
