  • is there a use for an old iPAQ ?

    Hi All

I have an old and once repaired (yip I drove over it, and it got fixed almost 100%) iPAQ 3600 series, the battery life is now shocking, lasts about 5 minutes before dying so its pretty useless as a PDA, what can I use it for on the carputer ? can I turn it into a heads up display ? perhaps, or can I use the touchscreen facility for anything ? i dont want it to go to waste , so there gotta be a use for it, unless someone wants to swop it for whatever they have ? where they could use it?

5 mins would suck, I suggest you get a new battery for it.

Not sure where you could use it, you cant take out the touchscreen controller, or whatever. You can get a slim long usb sync cable that you could let the passengers at the back use it for control of your computer.. provided you have a screen

You could run VNC on your computer and use the handheld (running a VNC client) to control it. Or, if your IPaq is new enough, and your PC is running 2K Pro or XP, run the built-in terminal services/remote desktop instead.

Running the PDA off of the car's power, that way you don't have to worry too much about the poor battery life.

You can use VNC over the USB sync cable, but it'll be a bit slow. If you have a network card for it, it might work better.

I own an Ipaq 4150 and I have been messing around with all this stuff. I have mine running with a wireless usb adaptor in the car pc. As far as software goes, terminal services is faster than VNC (IMO), if you just want mp3s download a program called remoteamp (http://www.smashcasi.com/remoteamp).

i've found a few winamp remote programs which may be useful, but i'd have to fabricate the ipaq into the dash or centre console for rear passengers as its battery life is so bad.
Or if i think its worth the money, possibly get a wifi card in it, replace the battery - http://www.mdsbattery.co.uk/shop/pro...uctGroupID=992

and have a fully wireless carPC remote with touchscreen, that would be pretty skick

You pretty much have to have the ipaq plugged into main power if you are using wireless as the battery discharges within a couple of hours.

I use my old iPaq as a backseat passenger remote for windows media player. I use Zerama server running on the car pc and set up an ad-hoc wireless network to do it wireless. You could do the same and just leave it plugged in.
