  • Question about Open Frame LCD

Is it possible to get an open frame LCD and just pop into the dashboard...or are there any disadvantages to purchasing open frame LCDs as opposed to fabrication?

    This is my current Dash:

I was wondering could I install an open frame LCD into the area where the my stock player is now...right above the temp controls...in a manner so that it would fit perfectly and the dash would basically serve as the frame

Here's a horrible rendering of what Im talking about...(keep in mind im at work and I only have access to paint)

Well, you still have that PCB right behind the screen. And judging by the pics, its not going to fit.

Also would help getting the size of the screen, etc.

And last question: why are so many people putting carputers into crap cars

unless you are verrrrrrrry lucky, the idea of just having it being able to sit there and look factory is gonna be tough. It may fit, but i can say that it wont look that good

yo 0l33l, those elantras are actually not that bad. I test drove one, and it was a nice sporty sedan.

The look like ****, and made by a Korean compnay. Also I've never seen one without body damage (just like ford probes).

i admit that the rear end of an elantra isn't the greatest, but the front is nice, very aggressive.
And it was not too long ago that toyota was considered 'just another japanese company.' Now even hyundai has it's bargain brand...

We've done something similar to this. It wasn't with an Elantra though. Here are a couple of pictures:

                Finished product (my Avatar)
                Fabrication picture 1
                Fabrication picture 2

Your best bet is to get a center console from the dealership and work on installing the LCD into it. In my opinion, using reputable LCDs provides much better quality than using a Xenarc/Liliput, etc. Our display is an NEC LQ series and it's ultra-bright, very clear, and easily visible in high sunlight from any angle. It's the perfect LCD (well, except that it's 6.5" and not 7" - doh!).

Here are a few more pictures of it with direct sunlight on the display:
                Hard angle with sunlight
Straight on, direct sunlight on the display pic 1
                Direct sunlight, straight on view

No Xenarc or Liliput can provide clarity, brightness or angle like this.

The drawbacks of course, are that they are much more expensive and difficult to install.
DashPC - The Linux Car (since 1999).

Dash LCD, Via Epia, GPS, XM, OBDII, DSSC Shutdown Controller.

As seen in the book Geek My Ride

The front isn't pretty (grill and weird shape of headlights), the rear is hiddeous (esp. the spoiler), the wheels look better than some other companies *cough*hubcaps*cough*.

Car companies underestimated toyota and datsun, and they are kicking themselves over that now. The japanese companies on the other hand are releasing their share of cheap cars, like the echo and the scions.

Hmmm... I'm interested. How much? VGA? Touchscreen?

                      [Edit]: Auto-on? VGA? Native Rez?

Since it's 95, I tend to believe it...The comment was made in jest anyway. However, I know many people believe that new is better & everyone has different tastes...

Yeh, I know those types of people

My car cost my grandma $7200 AFTER taxes, so it was $6400, that's $100 below KBB value The 97s with OBDII and the new front and rear ends can easily be found for under $12k.
