  • Nothing but blocks on 4x40

    OK here it is. I have wired up my first lcd. It is a Seiko L4034 4x40. I got power because there are blocks on the first and third lines. I have lcdprint. I run it and the first time it does not detect my lcd screen. Then I run it again and it detects it. I just type "lcdprint 378". Then I type "lcdprint 378 40 4 test.txt" and lcdprint does nothing. I still have the blocks on the lines and nothing else. Does the text file you are outputting to the screen have to be in any special place. I have mine in the same directory as lcdprint. That is in c:\. I am using Windows98SE. I can not get it to use any of the plugins that I have for winamp also. I have checked all of my wiring and the wires are connected to were they should be. I tested them with a continuity tester. The only thing that I found odd was that I could touch the +5 wire and a wire that is labled ground and I have a circuit. I do not know that much about electronics. Please help.

    I just tried it after I wrote the last post and it would not detect my lcd screen at all.

      might be sending the data too quick to the LCD? also i have a seiko screen and when writing code to use it the init setup was a little different to most other lcd's....

      i dont think the text file would be a problem.... if so the computer would bomb out with a file not found error or something similar....

      maybe post a copy/url link of the wiring diagram you are using..?

        I've had this problem and i was told to shorten the cable. havent checked it yet, but im optimistic about it working. try what magnetik said and what i said, and it should do the trick. how long is your cable btw?

            Hmmm..

            Yesterday-night I finally had some time to put together the same display I have.

            Soldered everything and I used about 8foot of networking-cable to connect it to my computer..
            Checked all the wires and they were right.

            Than I ran lcdprint from dos with a test.txt-file, and the text-file showed up nice and clearly (I really had to pinch myself.. first time hook-up and it worked )

            Then I wanted to try the markus Zehnder plugin which I have been playing with for a while and I wanted to use this with my display.
            I set it up with the normal parameters, and indeed, something showed up on the display, the first line was allright, the second line also, nothing on the 3rd and 4th line, but some items that belonged on the 3rd and 4th line sometimes showed up on the 1st and 2nd line (garbage ???).
            I played something with the polling times off the plugin, but the garbage only got worse.

            Then I wanted to use lcdprint again to see if everything was right?

            But all lcdprint displayed was garbage.
            Whats going on ? any ideas ?

              make sure none of the wires are crossed over and touchign each other aswell, anyway im thnking of putting soem kind of ide-header caus the wires keep breaking off

                when you have nothing but blocks, you maybe have set the contrast of the display to high.

                You have to set it that the blocks don't completely fade-out..

                If you have nothing but blocks, you cannot see any characters on the display..

                Send a text-file to the display and adjust the contrast and see what it does.

                  I tried to adjust the display and I have using the skematic fro eio. I do not have any backlight control. I adjust my pot and nothing happens. Here is the skematic



                  The only thing that I have done different is that I did not ground all of the pin on the lpt port because I didnt think that it was needed. Am I wrong? My cable is not longer than a foot. I am going to see if I am getting signals from the computer when I get home. I am using a lpt connector that I solder myself and a ribbon cable.

                    About your last question, no, you don't NEED the lpt pins grounded althought it is probably a good idea. It really sounds like you've made an error in your wiring. If nothing happens when you adjust your pots then theres definitely something wrong there...and if all you see are blocks then you have messed up the E, E2, R/W, R/S, or data lines (DB0-7) somewhere. From my experience, any "blocks" you have on the screen should go away as soon as any command is successfully sent to the lcd after it has been powered up...but then again i do not have a seiko lcd. anywho, best of luck

                      I can adjust the contrast but I can not adjust the backlight. I have connect the outside ground to the wiper on the pot. That is how I understood the diagram. Should I have not done that. That does not make since to me. It seems that it defeats the purpose of the pot because I am not changing the restance at all. I may be wrong. I will check my wiring once again to make sure that I did not switch anything. The other thing is my lcd came with pins already solder on but they are to small the ide connector does not stay on that well. That may also be the problem. How do I unsolder this to put on another one that came with the the cable I bought. Those pins make a good tight fit and go all the way in. I tried to remelt the solder but can not get it to go anywhere after that.

                        No no no no....

                        Do not remove the Header pins on the display, when you do, you are only making it harder to yourself to fix it.

                        True, the pins on the display are not long enough to make a decent connetion with a ide-connector. I had this problem too.

                        This is what I did.
                        I cutted the connector so that it would only leave me a 9x2 connector. Then,
                        Just 'shave' off a bit of the ide-connector it's bottom (2-3mm should be fine, when you go further than this you are able to see the pins IN the connector, when you see them, they always will make a decent connection) then it would slide on perfectly. put a ribbon cable on it, and you are ready to go. I tested this with a multimeter if all the pins had a decent connection, and they had one so it worked.

                        You are right about the pot-meter, it's a bit strange to connect it like this, but I connected it like the diagram (btw. yep that's the correct schematic), and It worked. You should be able to put the backlight at full brightness (which is really bright) or almost completely off.

                            IT WORKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

                            I got it to work. I was not making a connection with all of the pins. I shaved a little off the ide connector and then it worked. One problem still. The ide connector does not stay on the pins very well. Is there some way that I can make it stay on it better. I dont want to solder the wires to the pins because I am not the best at soldering. I have also heard that they have a tendency to break off. Thanks for all the help!!!!!!!!!!!
