  • Where to put my lcd???

I'm trying to think of how I'm going to fit my 14" tft lcd in my Optima. A pic of the dash is below, anyone have any ideas?

    Thanks for the help everyone.

    options...

    1. remove entire center console, block off hvac vents, relocate hvac controls, use computer to controll all of radio system (requires an amp and probably a touchscreen)
    2. build a case for it and mount it on an arm... put the base of the arm on the passenger side of the shifter so that the base isnt hitting you in the leg and annoying you when you drive.
    3. realze youre not going to get it in the dash and double sitck tape it to the inside of the window.
    4. 2 words... waterproof case.... on the hood... like a muscle car hood mounted tach.
    5. realize that there is no room to get it in the dash, sell the screen and buy a smaller screen that you will actually have a chance in hell in mounting it somewhere in youre car.

      Snake,
I have to agree with Mp3Z24. I don't think you could find any car/truck where installing a 14" LCD in the dash would be reasonably possible.

Your only option is a stand or arm to support the LCD.

Of course, now that I said it can't be done, you may want to prove to me it can! Nothing like a little motivation!

Yeah, I figured an arm would have to be the way to go. Anyone know of a good place to get one? Or a brand that is known to work well, etc?

Mount it in the bottom cushion of your seat, facing up. Then have your eyes surgically relocated to your *** and you are set.....

              Aren't we SO helpfull......
Possibly mount it in teh top of your dash.... so the reflection is on the windsheild.... you would need some software to flip the image so it was the right way round... the quality wouldn't be that good, and you wouldn't be able to see it during the day... but it'll be mounted.. lol... Its a fairly small car. (I think) so you shouldn't have much trouble reading stuff straight from the screen if you lent foward?? hmm... Get a touch screen.. set up a program so when you hit a certain part of the screen the image is alternated between mirrir image, and normal.... okay... just a thought.. fell free to ignore, but I thought it was a better answer than ^^^^^THAT^^^^^

actually the idea was fairly useless and a good 90% of the post was incomprehensible.

I'd suggest using an arm that would swing to be in front of the dash, but could be relocated beneath the dash on the passenger side when necessary.

I don't know how else to fit a 14in screen in a small car.

Thanks birrman, and mp3z24 for the suggestions. So now that I've decided to use a pivoting arm to mount the lcd screen, does anyone have any pics of similar setups so I can see how all you great creative minds (no sarcasm there, some of you people blow me away with your setups) have done this?

yeah the arm would be best..... and I reckon the arm will need to be mounted to the floor pan of the car, bolted thru - since thats gonna be a bit of weight.... hacking the dash looks hard in your case, I dont even think that centre area where the radio/airvents/etc looks to be 14inch across itself!

also keep in mind - heaven forbid you have an accident, that a 14inch screen on a flexi arm is gonna become a projectile very quickly..... personally I would use that as a second monitor on my desktop PC and get a smaller screen.....

but like a few have said, if you pull it off - wow!

relocation of the eyeballs sounds like a good idea too.... for some people I know they would mean wearing sunglasses all the time, cause the sun shines outa their u know what!
                    Project - GAME OVER :(

Hmm.. you could probably build a new casing for the screen that tapered back to fit into your dash area.. You'd have to get rid of a lot of stuff there though..

Here's an idea. Get a smaller screen, first. 6,8 or even 10, i think.

You have a large radio, why not delete it and get an amp. That way you can use the radio slot, and even use some of the bottom of the air vents (and what i assume is the clock). Go get some smaller air vents that look good, use them.

                          Picture Here (Optima)

Also, pic of my dash, and I plan on doing the same thing.
                          System in the works:
Celeron 850 or PIII 933, SB Live! Value into a stock 4 channel amp, ATI vid, 10.4" sharp LCD w/ allen's controller, Elo SW touchscreen overlay and controller, GPS, TV tuner, FW DVD drive, 4 port serial card, and some other stuff....

                          Loads of ideas.

                            Ok,

Here is how i have mounted my 12.1" LCD in my car. I have a modified Black Keycorp LCD case (from Genesis) that i am using. It is stuck to the top of my dash and is able to slide in and out from the dash as well as tilt up to go flush with the top of the dash. It is kinda hard to explain.....

I happen to have another keycorp case (white but can be painted) that could be handy for holding a 12.1" LCD for your car. It could be modified to hold a larger screen. (unsure if i want to sell it yet or not though as they are very hard to come across!)

I haven't downloaded the pics to my PC as yet, but keep a lookout for the pics of my setup (will have up in a few days)

I have attached a pic of the case i use to better explain the idea. The plastic covering on the support arm has been removed. The support arm is fixxed to the top of the dash and can slide (on nylon runners) in out and tilt back to sit flush ontop of the dash.

                            Get the gist????
