  • First Time Builder Questions

Hi, i just totaled my car, yeah it sucks i know. Im getting a new 2007 Honda Civic 4 Door LX, i already have great speakers and subs and amps from my last car that i installed the day i totaled it, yeah that sucks even more i know.

I am a true computer guy at heart so im thinking of going the way of building a Carputer (i guess thats what u guys call it). Ive done desktop builds before, im actualy a tech at circuit city.

I have a few questions about what i would need and what the total cost would be.... i found an in-dash pioneer GPS i like but i use my ipod for ALL my music and i want somthing that is instant, for example i would like to run Itunes in my car.

#1 - Could i use a Slimline HP PC, i can get it super cheap from my work, strip off windows vista and put either XP or a linux operating system on it, thats no problem.
#2 - How much and what kind of touch screen monitor would i want to get, or should i get a non touch screen and get a good wirless keyboard and mouse, or remote?
#3 - How could i get GPS on it if i wanted
#4 - how would i connect everything to the amps? Just get a sound card w/ RCA outs, or get a 3.5mm to RCA Y adapater or whatever.
#5 - I have 2 Sets of components and 2 10"s going in, Very high quality stuff, i want GOOD sound from them, What would u experts do.

Slimeline HP, i can get this or one simular for prob like 300 bucks - http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/HP-Pa...oductDetail.do

I think the tech job @ CC sucks more than totalling your car, but that's just me.
And I tried calling mine a flibbertydidgit, but it never caught on.

Cost is up to you. Some people can cobble a setup together from parts they have lying around. Others build from scratch. Some purchase pre-built units.
That Pioneer GPS unit is not going to interface well with a PC whatsoever. The display would be composite or s-video, not VGA. The touchscreen would only control the headunit functions, not the PC.

    Oh, and iTunes sucks.

    Yup.

That depends on the amount of space you have available and your budget. If you have a double0-DIN opening, are willing to eschew a headunit and have nearly $700 to drop on a screen, then the DWW-6500 is pretty damn sexy.

Buy a GPS receiver and navigation software.
#4 - how would i connect everything to the amps? Just get a sound card w/ RCA outs, or get a 3.5mm to RCA Y adapater or whatever.

I HIGHLY recommend doing some reading of the FAQs. There are a lot of informational write-ups in there that will help you along hte way. I also recommend planning your setup out thoroughly before you go purchasing pieces/parts.

We'd have a BBQ with lots of hot chicks, of course!
Seriously, do some reading. There are a good number of audiophiles on these forums that strive for top-quality sound.

I'd do some reading about HP's slim units on these forums before busting out with teh Paypal fundage. There could be some significant stumbling blocks.
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
    How about the Wiki?

i have a p4 2.8ghz processor sitting in my closet, that would work, i also have 756mb of pc2700 and a 9800 pro floating around somwhere, i guess i can try to find a board for that. i gues i wouldnt want the 9800 in there, takes up too much room.

I wasnt saying i wanted to use the pioneer as a screen haha, i was saying thats what it would come down to, the pioneer navi or a carputer.

I found this thermaltake retractable screen for 350 bucks.... what do u guys think? http://www.thermaltakeusa.com/produc...1/a2413-01.asp

I would rather have it look somthing like this though, this is where i got the idea, same car im getting just diffrent color and a year older....
      http://www.polkaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?t=38615

      say 250-350 for PC itself
      16 foot VGA i found for 16.99
      20 foot USB i found for 2.99
how much for a nice looking touchscreen, i mean somthing that i will be happy with?
      What else?
      GPS?
      And what Power Stuff?

I'm building my first setup and I highly recommend that you read the FAQ's. The answer to all your questions are there.
To somewhat answer your questions with my little knowledge (as far as carpc's go)
touchscreen price depends on size, but around $200-$300 seems the norm.
        GPS receiver is around 50-70
        power depends on the pc.

All can be had from the MP3car store for very competitive prices.

        Good Luck!

Another thing to consider is what frontend software you want to run as running Windows directly will be difficult while driving. Check the softare forum.

As far as OS and software, i have vista if i want, i have xp pro and home, i can get linux stuff, and i have Microsoft Streets & Maps.

I would eschew the power controller and inverter and go with an all-in-one DC-DC power supply.
