  • BMW E46 CarPuter, Help to get the project going!

    Hey everyone!

First post here, I have been browsing through some posts and decided setting up a computer in my E46 M3 would be a cool DIY project. I have always been into computer hardware but am not so pro when it comes to audio stuff.

Anyways, I've looked up Aberrant's, Zebel's, CoupeE46's and konfoo's installs. Really helps to get an idea of what is needed. I plan on also using a MacMini for it's form factor, like Aberrant's setup.

I know all this will be pretty E46 specific but it must also be pretty generic carputer stuff.

I'll try to make a list of the info I've gathered so far as to what I need to get this going! I will try to keep it "light" aswell, I plan on keeping the set up stock and not add up a lot of unecessary weight. Taking out the factory radio and the cd changer unit should make up for some of the added weight. I know a few pounds don't mean much, but still

Please take into account I have the H/K stock audio setup with 6CD charger in the trunk. That is where I plan to put my MacMini.

-Screen: Xenrac 7" TSV Touchscreen LCD monitor in the srcstc bezel.
MP3car has an xtra long monitor for it. So that's the cable that will run from my Mini to my Touchscreen in the console. Now if I want to plug a video signal in the trunk near the Mini in one of the free inputs from the cable that runs to the LCD, how will I switch the display from Mac to Video input if the buttons are concealed by the front bezel? I know there is one with a hole for the remote, but I hoped there would be another way.

Since I plan on using a Carnetix CNX-P1900 Dual Output 140 Watt 12V DC-DC Regulator I guess one output could go to the Mac (using the MacPac cable), and you use the other one to power up the screen. How do I wire the DC-DC Regulator to the LCD, any DIY or FAQ links?

-Computer MacMini so I will have the option to run OSX and XP.
    Powered with the Carnetix CNX-P1900.

-Power Well that's the DC-DC Carnetix unit. I wire it directly to my trunk battery and use an inline 15A fuse right? That's the only fuse I need to use in the whole setup?

    -Audio Now I am lost
From what I got I need to connect the Peripherals Electronics SVEN4 to my stock system. I am not sure if it also true for my H/K system but konfoo wired it to the amp in the trunk. From what I got I need to get to the stock harness in the trunk. Cut the wires. Hook up female RCAs to the wires going to the stock harness, and male RCAs just in case that go the front console harness. Using this:

    Black connector:
    Pin 38 - FrontL+ (yellow/red)
    Pin 30 - FrontL- (brown/orange)
    Pin 37 - RearL+ (yellow/black)
    Pin 29 - RearL- (brown/orange)

    Grey connector:
    Pin 9 - FrontR+ (blue/red)
    Pin 17 - FrontR- (brown/orange)
    Pin 8 - RearR+ (blue/black)
    Pin 16 - RearR- (brown-orange)

So once the harness is pluged back into the stock amp I will have 8 wires coupled into 4 female RCAs.

Then konfoo says: "Pin 10 on the grey connector (white) is switched +12V. You can use that as an ignition lead for the carpc and matrix." That means that the grey wire on Pin 10 sends in the ingnition info to the amp. So I need to keep that wire uncut and splice into it to get the ingnition lead for the Carnetix unit?

He also says: "First in the dash, get the standard wiring harness for the e46 and connect the 12v ignition to 12v antenna lines on the harness. Terminate the rest of the connectors." Humm that kind of lost me... After I take out the stock radio the harness is left there. Does he mean to find the 12v ignition wire and the 12v antenna wire that go into that harness and short them together? What does he mean by terminating the rest of the connectors?

I think I got the rest of the audio setup straight: trunk harness > SVEN4 > Soundgate AVM4 4 channel linedriver > M-Audio Audiophile > MacMini

For controls I will use BT stuff most likely. Do you know of a good USB/Firewire hub to use in the front console to plug in USB keys and HDDs?

I don't care for GPS or radio or gsm, I also don't want to mess around the car's electronics with an ibus. So did I list pretty much everything I would need besides the basic hardware and cables?

Thanks for any help, I really want to get into doing this but need a push to get a good start

    Hey there,
looks like we are in the same situation, I also have an E46. I want to put in a carpc, but i'm clueless on the audio part as well. I got a aftermarket radio harness adapter, plugged it in the front stock harness, where the radio use to be, and on the other end is all the wires. I thought I could run to a audio shop, pick up a hi-low converter, wire it to the harness wires, and on the other end, run the rca jacks to the soundcard. I havent dont this yet, and I'm still wondering if it will work. I dont have the line driver and audio component you have. Do I need that? Here is my thread:
    http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/newb...ssistance.html
If I find a solution, I will fill you in, if you do, please fill me in as well. I'm sure we can agree we really wanna get this going. Goodluck to us!

I'll check your thread out and will keep you updated for sure!

I actually don't have anything yet, just a list of stuff I saw used by the people I mentioned. Looks like it is the best way to hook up to the stock amp.

Well, I JUST finished my e46 M3 install, and the stock amp is NOT the best way. I put JL Audio through out the car. Component sets in front and back, JL amp, and a JL w3 sub.

If budget is an issue than i guess you could work with the factory amp, but I am not sure of the details.

i have a xenarc TSV 7 inch (moving soon to a transreflective screen soon though), self built C2D, 2GB RAM, 250GB HDD, DVD, BT, WiFi... the basics. I am not sure what OS you will be running, but as far as i can tell there is nothing as comprehensive on the software side for the mac like CF. ANd yes you can dual boot i know, or parrells, but. I am a mac fan, and i hear they have a car pc suit in the works. if you need the wiring xls file I have PM, and when i am at work tomorrow I will email it.

          thanks, check your pms

I want to keep it stock because I really don't want to go through all the hassle of changing the whole system. I like the way the H/K kit sounds, I don't need anything better or louder. Actually I never listen to the music very loud cause you gotta listen to that engine do the talking you know haha

Did you use an IBUS thing to make the wheel audio controls work? I'm really don't want to mess up my electronics lol

you will have mail as soon as i send it, for some reason work does not allow me to send xls files outside of the network - but in terms of iBus, i have not recieved my Hacktheibus hardware yet, but from other posts i have read it works fine. However if you are using CF, i read about some issues with CF not taking the event correctly. it does not "mess" with your electronics, it simply adds the ability to send and recieve signals outside of the bmw hardware - simply an emulator of sorts. as soon as i recieve mine, i do plan on working on an ibus module for CF - not that i use the wheel controls much, but it would be nice to have them.

about the engine sound, i agree, but i still like sound if i need it.

Of course music is alway nice haha

For controls I was thinking of using the Griffin Powermate, gives you all the controls needed and it can be mounted near the shifter for easy use. That along with the touchscreen should really be more than enough input. But still wheel controls would be nice, keep me updated on how your ibus install works.

What is that CF software for mac, got a link? I was thinking of just setting OSX to be more useable on the 7" and mostly use iTunes in cover mode you know. As I said here GPS and on board communication is not really available or usefull lol

But is there a software for mac that does this: You link up your bluetooth phone to the mac when your in the car. Then the software allows you to pick up the phone from OSX and use your system mic and output for the phone call, while it pauses iTunes etc.. Is there something like that?

              thanks for any help

Ok so I started ordering stuff!!! I'm stoked to get this going. So far ordered this:

                -E46 srcstc'sFront Bezel from bimmer.net

-Xenrac 7" TSV Touchscreen LCD with the xtra long cables and extra monitor power cable to wire it to the DC-DC regulator. So that's everything to hook up my screen.

                -MacMini

-Carnetix CNX-P1900 with the MacPac. I need to get a 15A fuse for it right?

So now I have the Mac and the LCD connected and both are wired to the Carnetix P1900.

-SVEN4 + Soundgate 4 Channel + M-Audio Firewire preamp. That is all my audio hook up.

I'll keep updated on my progress as I receive everything.

(I've only skim read, sorry) - if you're just driving the P1900 with the mac and screen (and optionally a 5v add on) then you only need the one 15A fuse between your battery and the 1900 (as close to the battery end as possible)

If you're putting in an amp then you'll need a seperate wire from the battery with a fuse on it going to this.

Have you done the resistor mod on your 1900 yet, and did you get the right Y cable with your macpac?

Thanks for the fuse info, so I just need one for the P1900 close to the battery.

Whats the resistor mod and I hope I got the right cable lol I took the MacPac on mp3car.com store that came as an option with the P1900

No probs. The resistor mod and the cable will depend on what you got shipped - in the UK the dealers only seem to have stock of the Carnetix P1900 2.1 - if you have 2.2 it's already done - it should be printed on the board whether it's 2.1 or 2.2 - see here if you need to do the mod on 2.1.

The Y cable should hopefully be the right one.... there are two possible Y cables, shown here - if you have the alternative one, it will work fine for the 1900 controlling power, but you won't be able to manually use the power switch - this means that you can't use it in the house and it's harder to reset if you have any major crash problems. I originally got the alternative cable with mine but my dealer got the other cables in and sent me one.
