  • Can I install a mini in my 98 civic??????

Hi there folks, I've been wanting to make this a reality for a long time. I have a 98 honda civic, and I want to install a mac mini. To date I have only seen one other vehicle in that year, that has a puter installed. He sacrificed his cupholders. Is there anyone else who has done it?

I want to install a mac mini.

I think the best screen for my car without sacrificing anything would be a retractable screen but from those i've seen, they are bulky and thick. Are there any other options?

This is what my interior looks like. minus the stock radio, replaced a couple years ago with a pioneer deck. I'm open to any and all suggestions

    Yes, it is possible.
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
    How about the Wiki?

Under normal circumstances, a signature would go here.

        Yes it is possible.

As for the 2nd question, how good are you at fabrication?

haha...fabrication. Well lets put it this way, i've never done it before. I imagine it is not an easy task. I have included some updated pics of my car exactly as it looks right now. I was thinking it might be easier to put the lcd right above/behind the cupholder. There is an old tape deck there that serves no purpose anymore. Simply for asthetic reasons. Would a retractable unit be more practical in there? Or a complete fabrication of the dash? Is it worth losing the cup holders? Thanks

I've included some recent pics taken today of my cockpit. Note the cupholder...closed and open..and the size of the area. is it worth putting something in there?

Well depending how good you are (or a good friend ) at fabrication, move the HVAC controls to the old tape deck. Then you have a double-din-ish area for a 7"-8" screen in the centre console. You really dont want a screen by your cupholders. That is not a normal spot for it to be. It will look akward, and extremely non-OEM.

I think there is a civic install here from a guy in Brazil or something who built this rediculously awesome wood enclosure by the cupholder area and put the screen there. That would be what you have to do. I will see if I can find it, but I can see it pretty clearly in my head. It is a lot more work then it looks like it is.

To me I think the best option like I said, move the HVAC, put the screen in the normal spot.

hmmmm..... i don't know how to move those controls...i that is completely out of my league. I'm gonna look into a retractable unit and see how it would work. Unless I can find someone here who might know how to do it, and the cost is good.

That spot where the tape deck is looks like a perfect spot for the mac mini. If it were me, I would just use a retractable screen in the original spot of the radio. I haven't done any research on head units recently, so I don't know if there are any that have a vga input and an aux sound input. A motorized touchscreen head unit is what I would try to find.

Explorecaves...I thought of that as well.

Issue 1. Won't the air vents be blocked by a retractable unit? In the winter I have the heat coming fromt he heat, but in the summer I use those vents that might get blocked by the LCD

Issue 2. Can the LCD be damaged by the air hitting it?

Issue 3. Where do I put the radio? The fact is, I like to listen to the radio as well. I'm weary of losing radio functionality.

                    1.) Yes

                    2.) Over time, yes

3.) There is the HQCT for AM/FM and Sirius/XM adapters for satellite radio.

The reason I did not suggest a 1-din is because they suck. Not just suck, but they suck big time. When you press them, they wobble. They look cheap and in my opinion ghetto (unless it is those popup screens in some japanese cars where it slides out from the dash vertically. But all slide out horizontal and flip up, suck.

Also, they have very weak gears inside of them. So after a while of use, they wont be motrized anymore. A quick search on these forums will prove just this.

The civics as far as I know are all electrically controlled HVAC. That means to move them, all you need to do is extend the wires, and it will work.

2K1 Toaster, i'll try this week to attempt to gain access to the centre console and see what is underneath. By looking at my current setup, I don't think the vents will fit where my tape deck is. The vents look larger than the tape deck itself, unless the black moulding around the tape deck can come off.

Not the vents, just the controls.

How much do you like having the cig lighter there? Possibly a good place for the Mini.... maybe do something like what BugByte did with his.... http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/work...i-install.html

explorecaves....I actually don't have a cig. lighter, just a power outlet. Anyhow, same deal. But what did you have in mind? Cut away the area and make a spot for the mini? just above the tape deck in the place of the lighter? It's a possibility. I'd have to see what is behind there, and i am weary of cutting my dash. Once you cut you can't go back. I'll look into it though.
