  • Stereo H.U. (To be or not to be?)

I've noticed that some people have chosen to keep their stereo head unit along with their PC. Why is that? Is this better than the PC alone? How so?
What are the pro's and con's to having or not having the stereo head unit.

Some use the aux input of their HU to to run the carputer through the system and some retain the HU just for the radio tuner......boils down to personal preference and your system setup

I had it in my Scion, but ditched it in my Subaru for space limitations... the biggest benefits of having a true head unit will allow for volume control and a good AM/FM tuner... as for now there are no GREAT solutions for FM. Plus in a beginning system you will likely have crashes/lockups and having the head unit means you have a back entertainment source.

I will never have another car with a head unit - UNLESS it is like the BMW's setup where all the friggin controls are linked.

For me, nothing beats a REAL volume control. I am lucky to have a double din in my Eclipse. I have the head unit on one, and a motorized Touch Screen in the other.

Also something to think about, I saw a post somewhere where someone made a cable, and put the faceplate of the car stereo in another location on the dash. Pretty ingenious if you ask me! This way you could put the Head Unit out of the way, and out of sight, and just have to worry about surface mounting a 2" x 7" face plate.

my newest recommendation is to get the Turtle Beach external sound card, because it has a small dial on the side that can be hard wired as a remote volume!!

I just wanted to upgrade my audio, but it turns out that the small dial is really just two switches... I intend to run this to my dash as a volume remote, I also am going to ditch all the headphone jacks in the system and go to RCAs...
