  • A new CarPc Interface?

Hi, guys I been on this forum for a while but I never really had a need to post anything. I have been following the works of some of the great thinkers on this forum such as turbocad6, the guys who came up with the HD radio cables, fusionbrain(brilliant idea by the way) e.t.c and what I have seen so far is nothing short of amazing. It has always been my dream to integrate a pc into a car way before cars started shipping with digital interfaces (might be exaggerating but its been on my mind for a long time). I have never had the prowess for writing programs or designing interfaces but I do love thinking of ways to make a program simpler or nicer looking.

To cut a long story, I am coming to you guys for help, I have an idea for a carpc interface that i feel might do what the iphone did to the cellphone scene. I have been trying to design it on photoshop but my skills in that area are extremely lacking and so i was hoping to get some help from forum members such as mugurg whose work i think is nothing short of amazing.

I have drawings on paper that i could upload if needed to give an idea of what i am thinking. I don't have a car yet but what i have is an idea that is threatening to burn a hole in my skull. Please help.

My idea integrates things i seen in the ipod touch, NXE on the xbox 360 vista and a few other things. the interface is similar to what is in NXE the bottom third of the screen is like a reflective floor which helps to give a 3D look

the rest can be a picture or whatever photo you want just like NXe. the main screen stays in front of the background like the ps3 above and it has a dynamic reflection on the floor. on the left will be glossy buttons that correspond to each function such as radio, gps, bluetooth, music etc. as each button is pressed it glows showing that it is selected and i was also thinking that each button should have a different colour so that when it glows a small glass like section around the main screen glows the same colour kinda like when you change colours in aeroglass theme in vista.

also a 3d icon would appear at the bottom right corner like in the position of the xbox 360 logo. the icon will look like whatever function is selected eg a 3d radio for radio, 3d old stlye video cam for video etc.

at the top of the screen would be a bar that would show some main info such as weather, indoor/outdoor temp, time & date, bluetooth/wifi/gps status, phone signal strength, alerts and txt msgs using little icons like you have at the top of smartphones like in winmo, symbian etc and each icon will be clickable/touchable to get more details or change settings.

in the music screen there will be an interface similar to what i have below (its incomplete but that took me 3hrs to do and i hate how it looks but its a hazy idea of what i am thinking of) there are two modes coverflow and album art mode. in coverflow mode you can swipe through albums just like in ipod touch but in albumart mode you just have the album art, double tapping will switch between modes. in coverflow mode just below the album art will be song name and artist then eq animation that moves with the music then the seek bar and at the bottom will be the play pause ff/rwd buttons. on the left will be library and playlist buttons and on the left will be reapeat all/one and shuffle buttons. the play, pause rwd/ff will be actuall circular glossy buttons but the playlist, shuffle, repeat and shuffle will just be icons but they will glow when selected. album art mode will do the same thing but it will have the song name and info on the right of the albumart instead of below.

      trying it again

      this one kinda s**ked

an iphone style interface? idk having a bunch of rows of icons on your screen is going to be very difficult to use while driving. But I think there should be better transitions and animations with flash.

Oh nooo, i didn't meaning having a row of icons like on the iphone. what i like about the iphone is the simple glossiness, nice icons and smooth transitions and that is what am trying to take from the iphone and apply to a carpc interface.
there will only be about 6 main buttons and they would be on the left side of the screen like what i have in the photoshop above.

^ didnt see pics. I do like the idea of a 360 style interface. even having user sign on, then a 360 like character standing there with motions would be pretty cool.

pretty much all skins and front ends do seem to be geared towards very slow computers. i bought an acer netbook and even that is way overkill for them.

this is what i came up with after another 3hrs cutting and pasting and searching for tutorials. the icons are not my work they are from the iphone and the video albumart is from kmplayer and the messaging icon is from a screenshot on a nokia 5800. the background and button and the toolbar are my work though.

EDIT: i meant for the green toolbar to be at the top of the screen.

o thats wierd, can you see the pics now? and about the skins and front ends that is my thought exactly, i have always been wondering why the skins and front ends look so 80's style when most of the carpc's available now can handle web 2.0 style graphics and handle it well. this is why i came up with my idea, it is also because most of the frontends i have seen seem to be extremely cluttered with lots of unneeded icons or settings (no offense to those who like it that way) which to me turns off most new comers to the idea of car pcs. i believe that a carpc interface can be simple and intuitive while at the same time being sophisticated.

i fixed it, this is actually how i wanted it to be.

the red around the main screen corresponds to the colour of the selected menu but it glows and i didnt know how to do that so this will suffice. my original idea was not to have buttons but to have tabs like what you have in dictionary's with the corresponding function written on it. as u touched each one it would animate and change. gooogaaah!! i am finding this so hard to describe. i will keep looking online to see if i can find something to illustrate.

here is a screen with a background on. i found the image online from a webdesign blog http://garcya.us/blog/vector-speakers/. i have no affiliation with them but i liked the image and i am using it for illustration purposes only.

you should also look into site launcher when you make the browser. much cleaner and touch friendly than favorites or bookmarks.

also, i'd look into using wii sounds in it.

funny thing happened while i was searching online for tech news and this pops up and it is like someone stole my idea lol. this is a intel mid concept that was introduced sometime ago.
it has an interface almost exactly like what i envisioned.

i had never seen that photo before but it has the main theme i was thinking of as in different colored tabs corresponding to individual functions, i was thinking more for mine to be glasslike and glow depending on which tab was selected.

that hand too looks so much like mine and the watch is huge like mine, a friend of mine saw the photo and thought it was my hand. lol.
