  • New Ram 512mb not reading right?

Ok so i got new mobo and a new 512 sdram stick but it only reads 284mb of ram... Why is that?

It might be safe to assume that it is a bad stick of ram, but it would help to know the rest of your setup to confirm that though.

also it might be a setting somewhere to limit the amount of memory the system uses.

I'm guessing you have integrated video? If so, how much RAM is allocated to video RAM?

If you can allocate RAM, there's a setting for how much RAM to allocate to video. If it's not there, it's a fixed amount and you can't change it.

And did you put DDR RAM into a motherboard that doesn't use DDR per chance?
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?

Well it will never be a 1Gb with 2 sticks of 512Mb and onboard video. But it should be much higher than 312Mb unless it is incompatible.

Are you using high density RAM? Can you run memtest? My current guesstimation would be bad mobo, or more specifically bad RAM controller.
