  • Complete Noob and want to spruce up my E39 dash with a Carpc

I have absolutely no clue as to the ins and outs of carPc's. My E39 needs a facelift and I wanna start with the in-car entertainment. I want to remove the stereo and replace it with a touch screen carPc. I'm not ambitious as I'm so new to this, so all I want it to do is
    • play music
    • play movies on multiple screens
    • browse the net
    • GPS

I have got little knowledge of Linux but do realise that it runs on a lot less power than windows but can be restricting with regards to software. Can somebody help me by giving me a complete shopping list of the hardware/software required and then instruction on how and where to install the components. Also if you have ideas of extra applications the hardware can also be used for i would be really grateful for any suggestions.

for hardware, there is no single perfect solution that works for everyone-- I like and recommend zotac and asus motherboards, but other brands work just as well. The same goes for software...

Try narrowing down the list of components that fit your needs and then going from there-- no offense, but your post as it stands is like walking up to a car salesman and telling him that you want a silver car...There are lots of silver cars, but each one is different...

Yeah point taken, basically I'm looking for the cheapest and most straight forward way to incorporate the applications I want.

Because I'm so new to this I really haven't got the 1st clue of where to start. i really need an idiots guide on where to start.

Huh. I never stumbled across this. Usually people just refer everyone to the FAQ Emporium. Good link.

i don't know why this link is at the bottom of the faq's(imo, it should be at the top),

otherwise, you can apply most general computing ideas, and topics to this also, so if you are completly new to building computers in general, a computer site might be another good spot for info.

the mp3car store also sells prebuilt units that might meet your requirements-- you would need to talk to them for more info though..
