  • Using a tablet screen for a carpc (lots of questions)

Hi, I am new to the forum, but have been busy researching here and other places for more information on what I am trying to do. I have a touchscreen tablet donor that I want to build a system around, but I am at a loss when it comes to converting the ribbon to a usable interface (VGA or DVI, or preferably USB). I have a lot of experience in building pc's and car systems, but no experience with modifying displays. I am willing to solder, hack or whatever it takes to get this to work, I just need a direction or some links as far as where to go from here.

I understand that I will most likely have to buy a usb interface controller for the 4-pin touchscreen cable, but if there is a way around that I'd like some advice as well.

The guts of my system will most likely be one of the setups I have lying around or my Mini HP.

The pictures are of the three cables coming from the screen. A high/low power wire, a 4-pin cable for the touchscreen, and a 20 pin cable that I am trying to convert from. If you need more pics, I can take more.

The screen is a 10.4 inch Philips LC104S1 A1, if that makes a difference.

Thanks for any help or advice.

EarthLCD.com has 4-wire resistive touchscreen to USB controllers for about $40. That seems to be the easy part. Finding a controller for the screen might be harder. Try searching for LVDS or FPD-Link to VGA (or DVI) converter.

Thanks for the info. I had found those in another thread on here as well, and I will probably have to go with that usb controller. As far as the screen controller, I have been searching, but to no avail at this time. Do you (or anyone out there) know of anyone that has done this, or something similar? I just need a point in the right direction...

Okay, so I have found the USB controller I will be ordering, but I still need some help with the display part. I really need some help here, please.

Do I need to get the whole controller module in the first picture (http://store.earthlcd.com/CNT-EV-gm2221-LCD-Controller)

Or will the simple converter suffice? (2nd pic http://www.orbitmicro.com/global/lvd...0-p-10904.html)
