  • MK2 PC newb

What started out being just a plan to mount a screen in the dash of my newly aquired MK2 golf VR6 to tune the onboard Megasquirt ECU without constantly carrying a laptop, turned into a snowball effect of research and ideas to take it further. I'm a senior mechanical engineering student but not very savy when it comes to computers other than using them.

This will be the first computer I have built and should be a interesting and learning experience, Most all the info I have researched has been off this site and it seems like all the questions I will have, have been answered here before so don't worry about having to tell me to "SEARCH" haha, newb to car pc but not to forums.

anyway a run down of my plans for the pc include, touchscreen with radio tuner, gps, and megatune + whatever I decide to add in the future, I'm not really into a bunch of stuff I will never use like watching movies in my car because after all it is a VR6 and the spirit is in the drive + im trying to keep the boot times down so useless stuff to me is out the window.

    Hardware on the way:
    weather proof gps reciever
    gp83-160w dc-dc PSU
zotac atom 330 (dual) 1.6 ghz w/NVIDIA ion motherboard/cpu/video combo
    2gig ram 1066 DDR3
    32gig corsair nova SSD
    ads tech fm tuner stick
    lilliput 7" 669gl-70np/c/t touch screen w/HDMI

software will be tinyxp with RR front end set to hybernate

I also am going to try to integrate some sort of keypad on the touch screen hooked to a relay for the power ON for the megasquirt so a correct passcode must be entered before the car will start, or a fingerprint reader. passcode seems more efficient tho.

until next time... I'll be lurking in the shadows here

      thanks,

got all my hardware put together, installed tiny xp revision 09:
tried to install the new Ride Runner and got a "must install activex 10" message then a runtime error, installed activex 10 and it prompts for the same thing. downloaded .net framework SP3 and got the same thing.

installed Ride runner on a different computer and moved it over via flash drive, it almost opens but then get a ("c:/desktop/.../.../skin.." does not contain a valid skin! check your settings and try again. details in debug.txt)

Kinda long debug but does anyone have a suggestion of how to get it to start up? downloaded a different skin with the same results..

      thanks in advance!

      this is the debug txt:

Well it's complaining that it can't open the .png files for the skin because GDIPlus isn't installed. I'd guess it's because you used Tiny XP instead of a stock Windows XP install. Just install regular Windows XP. It can be tuned to boot fast, especially since you're using an SSD. Or use standby and boot times won't matter.

Thanks for the help! I'm going to try to download GDIplus and extract in system32, see if that helps out. I really like TinyXp and how it works on the computer.

I'm having a issue trying to get the PSU to stand-by the computer, I have to manually jumper the (pwr, swtch) pins on the mother board to turn it on/off, Its my understanding that with the GP83 power supply you can add a jumper to the (pwr, swtch) back to the PSU and it will hibernate/hard shut down per your pre-set "PSU jumper settings" LED settings on mine.

Right now it works as a normal PSU unit no matter what LED setting I have it on. Tried to hook the jumper from J8 to the (pwr, swtch) conector on the motherboard with no luck doing both polarities, I have a feeling their is another set of pins on the motherboard I should be hooking these too..

Right, you need to connect J8 on the GP83 power supply to the power switch header on your motherboard. Then in Windows, go to the advanced power settings page, and configure it to hibernate (or suspend) when the power button is pressed.

hey, i just bought an MK2 golf myself. Was just getting started with the PC build process. I will probably not be swapping in a newer motor, instead will focus on the infotainment for now.

were you planning on mounting the touch screen in the console where the ashtray is now? what were you planning on putting in the single-DIN radio space at the top of the dash?

ok thanks for the advise, I'm having trouble with my touch screen now, At first I just hooked it up and it worked when I powered the ecu and the touchscreen up at the same time, but then I hooked it to my laptop and installed the drivers on it and adjusted the resolution so I could test all my software on a easy system with keyboard and mouse etc. Now when I hooked it back up to my car pc I can't get a input signal to the touchscreen... any advise?

Yes I haven't updated this thread lately because I have been in the middle of fixing the mechanical stuff and tuning the car, (replaced head gasket, belt tensioner, crank pulley, PS pulley etc etc etc) but I just got the touch screen mounted and here is a pic of where it is going

removed for now as all the heat ducts not under the dash, But when I hook them up, the heater controls will be moved to where the ashtray is right now since I don't use it and it is about useless.

Figured out the video output problem, was using a little 110-12v plug in power inverter to bench test the computer, only put out 500mA which wasn't enough to push the video out. Plugged the PS up to the car 12v and its working great!
