  • mp3 tag help!

I am completely lost on a problem I'm having with my car stereo and hopeful that someone has at least heard of this issue and can shed some light.

I have a JVC KD-S100 car stereo. I use my 32GB thumb drive in the car to play all of my mp3s and it works perfectly fine with playback. The issue I'm having is with tagging; for some reason (and I can't seem to find a pattern) it displays random mp3s with underscores instead of spaces. For example: Clutch - Power Player.mp3 on my display SHOULD show up as "Power Player" but instead shows up as "P_o_w_e_r_P_l_a_y_e_r"

Again there seems to be no pattern to this; some songs on the same CD will show up this way and others won't.. or entire albums will do this or entire albums will NOT do this. I'm really lost as to what might be going on and am hopeful someone has a suggestion.

    Thank you in advance!

Sounds like some are tagged and some aren't. Probably the ones that are not tagged are showing up as the file name with underscores.

Or maybe some are tagged with ID3v1 vs ID3v2 and that's where the issue lies. Either way find a good tag editing program and check it out.

To reply to your first comment all of the mp3s are tagged; they're all tagged using the Gracenote database via Winamp's "auto-tag" option. All of them are tagged under the ID3v1 and ID3v2 sections as well.

Perhaps using a different program for tagging would be good though and I'm certainly willing to try it; do you have any suggestions for a good tag program?

This is what I've always used.

I've never used winamp's auto tag, how does it work?

EDIT: Scratch that, I'll go find out.

lol well hopefully it works better for you than it has for me.

It's like I said I use it and it does actually tag all of my mp3s; just some have those pesky underscores all throughout the title and I can't seem to narrow it down to a pattern of any sort; it's random on the ones it affects.

I'll try the software you recommended and see if that makes a difference. Does this software also remove tags as well? I'm thinking I should just rip out the tag information for all of my mp3s and redo them from scratch.

Yeah, it's full featured and awesome. It'll query quite a few different places for album art and info, or you have the ability to edit the tags by hand. I usually use it to query Amazon for album info, and it usually works awesome!

Awesome thanks for the information. I'll try it this evening and update tomorrow with the results; hopefully this takes care of it.

Sure thing. My only complaint about it is... I wish it was free. I think it's $30 to buy. It does have a 30 day trial though, should be more than enough time to use it for troubleshooting.
