  • mounting a carpc upside down?

    I'm looking at purchasing a black box mobile pc.

    I'd like to remove my factory amplifier (2002 Nissan sentra SER Spec V) and bolting this in it's place. The factory amp is mounted under the package shelf in the trunk. I'd figure there because its out of the way and has alot of ventilation. The carputer will handle my audio so the factory amp won't be needed.

    My first thought is will everything stay seated on the motherboard over the bumps? I guess you would have to take a look at see if any components are at risk of coming unseated. Also heat dissipation might be an issue unless their are enough fans to pull the heat out because likely there is no venting in the "bottom" of the case.

    Just a question: if you are eliminating the factory amp to power the speakers, what are you going to replace it with?

      All of my car PC's have been mounted upside down. I even had one with a PCI riser video card in it. Just make sure anything like that is secured firmly to keep it from loosening.

      Disk drives, DVD drives have all been run inverted with no problems. All my mounts were bolted directly to the package shelf with no shock absorbing and worked without issue.

        I'll eventually add an Alpine amp to power the speakers. I first wanted to see if it was possible.

          I have mine mounted like that, but I made my own shock absorbers with a Sugru substitute called oogoo. Basically it is just a silicone and Cornstarch mix that drys quickly and provides enough vibration damping to help a bit.

              As Barnyard said, you need an amp. The computer does not have an internal amp. Your choice is to buy an aftermarket amp right up front or figure out how to interface with the existing OEM amp. I think since the amp is there and all of the speaker wiring in done OEM, it would be simpler and cheaper to interface with the OEM amp.

              Assuming your vehicle is North American or the same as North American, you will need one of these if you do not have the Rockford Fosgate system:

                I do have the Rockford Fosgate system.
                So I will have to buy the harness shown and run RCA's from the computer to the front of the car where the factory radio plugs are? I should be able to tap the wire directly before the amp correct?

                  I was trying to keep my cable runs as short as possible. The longest being the cable for the in dash monitor. I'll see what type of audio output is on the computer and figure out a way to interface it with my stock amp until I buy a new one. I'll use the stock amp until the bugs are worked out, and there should be some.

                    You'll need that adapter first to figure out what it is giving you for connectors to work with. If the pic is accurate, it is giving you male RCA connectors so a 3.5mm to dual RCA Y cable is likely what you will need but you will then also need F-F couplers to connect the 2 male ends together.
