  • 2 Single DIN to Double DIN

    Hi all,

I've been lurking and searching these forums for a while now but haven't been able to locate anything - my car is a bit of an anomaly it seems!

I have an Australian Mazda 626 2000 sedan (this one), which from what I can gather has a rather different interior to the usual (USA?) model. To elaborate - the main control column is made up of 3 Single DIN slots, separated by strong plastic bars, instead of the Double DIN + AC control unit combo everyone else seems to have.

I want to convert two of these Single DIN slots into a single Double DIN slot so that I can install a monitor, but I would like to keep the option of reverting to two Single DIN slots for when I sell my car. How would I do this? I was thinking of sawing off one of the plastic separator bars and installing a Double DIN kit that also allows for Single DIN installations, but so far the instructions or required items have eluded me as searches always pick up the *other* Mazda 626 2000!

    Thanks in advance!

(I will post pics in about half a day - can't get them now as its currently 1 am over here)

i've got a couple ideas but will need to see some interior shots-- all the images i found show a double din area...

I want to turn the top two slots into a double din, and put the A/C unit into the lower slot. I'll figure out something with the headunit - I'll either find another spot for it or just let the Car PC drive the amps.

There doesn't appear to be any frame or such in the center console aside from the grey plastic... not sure if that's a good or bad thing?

wow, you might have the easiest single-to-double din conversion ever..

yeah, just pop those bars out, and you'll have a opening just larger then 2din (4")-- because the width of the bar would need to be accounted for.

Heh yeah I thought so too, I noticed so many other people having to refab dashes and all. Though I haven't installed any Double DIN things before and I'm having difficulty seeing how to install my not-yet-here monitor:

It looks like the side frames on the monitor are supposed to screw into something, but I don't have any frame to screw into on mine. So I have to buy a Double DIN cage or install kit or something to install it right? Like this: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI....m=200586502039 ?

yeah, you will def. need something like the ebay link. though $13 seem pretty expensive to me. try to talk to a car stereo shop-- they might have some extras they would be willing to give away-- i used to find stuff like that in audio shops trash.. even if you could get some single din ones, you could just cut them up to work..

otherwise, a part like that might be able to be sourced for cheaper from a wrecker.

Ah OK, I'll try and dig around to see if someone has a spare 2DIN frame. Thanks for your help!
