  • Question on 1st install - Volvo S40 R-Design 07'

For quite a few years now I have wanted an in-car PC, through the cars I have had money etc. Finally i'm going to do it, all be it in an S40 which isn't ideal.

So my first problem is where to put a screen in-dash or motorized, bearing in mind I wanted everything to look as neat as possible and also the fact that I lack any experience in any fabrication or mechanical stuff. The best option that I have come up with was to mount a Lilliput 7" touchscreen on top of the dash, and drill a hole in the dash to run cables to and from the screen. Having decided on the screen to use, next question was how to mount it? I decided to get a Lilliput mounted in a ByByte holder, then stainless or brushed steel can be used to create the enclosure around it which will compliment the rest of the interior of the car.

I'm thinking that the best place for the dash is on top of the dash, above the air vents. I'm sure how to attach the enclosure maybe to linear slots cut for the side of enclosure to slot in to or some sticky velcro some how?

Next thing is where to put the motherboard / PC itself? My most preferred location is behind the centre console as there is some space although not lots, airflow available, install is all up front on the car. Under the seats is not an option, as there seems to be other things there along with air vents. There could be space in the glove box although i'm not sure how I would get airflow in there, and would make a mess with cabling. As for the boot, I think it would be a nightmare to run everything to the boot and back up again. Don't know if anybody has any advice on this one?

You're welcome for getting a picture from Google so that the other forum members have an idea what you are looking at, as you will find that most of them don't actually have one of your particular model of car and therefore don't know what it looks like.
Just a place to start - you know with a picture being worth a thousand words and all.
As for placement, airflow and space, unless you live near a more qualified board member who wants to come help you - that's going to be your journey. We can offer to come up with creative (perhaps impossible) solutions when you encounter problems, but without being there it is hard to know what you need to do and tell you.
So - be informative, stay up to date on progress, and most of all dig in!

      Hello Lincolnman,

Thank you for your reply. I'm sorry, I did try to attach some photos a couple of times but kept failing.

I will try and think outside of the box and stay positive

No problem. If you can take pictures and get them uploaded (not sure why you're having problems, I guess) showing your space to work with and some dimensions people can try to help - but of course we cannot directly see where the problems lie unless you find someone else who has the same model.
          Anyway - good luck!
