  • NEWB question. Anyone familiar with GMLAN. Please help!

    I need to know if there is anyone on here that is experienced with the BCM GMLAN system from 08/09 Pontiac G8. There is $$$$ in it if you are and know how to do some tricky stuff. I need my 09 G8 HVAC/RADIO to operate completely standalone. No steering wheel controls, no input from anything other than BCM and power. Is it possible? Can it be done? What do you think...


    The radio/HVAC system are going into a 69 GTO, with teh rest of the dash. The only electronics I want from the G8 in the dash are the HVAC/ and radio. Everything else is out.


    I know it will be a lot of programming, anyone up to it?... If you think you can do it PM me. I am new to all of the LAN systems and learning but I need someone with real experience to help get this thing rolling.

    I'm putting an 04 GTO dash into a 72 LeMans, more or less the same as your Goat, but I'm doing a carpc in place of the radio. I haven't started messing with it that far yet(I need to get some more parts). Let me know how you make out

      A problem you will run into with this is that your radio ties into the can bus and will not work without it. It will pull the VIN from the vehicle to verify it isn't stolen and will also require the CAN bus to communicate some functions. The courtesy tones of most newer GM vehicles also go through this. The ONLY way you will be able to accomplish this is to have a fake BCM in your vehicle to communicate to the radio. You may be able to build one with an Arduino board but it will take some trial and error and you will need to be able to pull the communications between the radio and the BCM before it was removed to identify what is being communicated.

      If you do this yourself you can expect a lot of work and a few trips to the dealer to unlock your radio (At $30 a pop if your lucky). If you plan on having someone else doing this for you expect to pay thousands. But in the end why? It would be much cheaper to build a CarPC into that vehicle and have much more power.

        I was going to run the BCM from the vehicle that the radio came from. I will use as much as I need to in order to make this work. What I am trying to figure out is what exactly will that be. I also am trying to find out if there is a way for someone to program the BCM and modules for the radio and HVAC to enable this to happen. Is it possible and who can do it. I looked at CarPCs but the ones I have seen look like they tie into the BCM anyway.

          Correct me if I am wrong but that 69 gto would have cable controlled heating/dampening doors. I really think you are beating a dead horse trying to just use bmc from computer controlled car into a non-obd1 or 2. I think you would be better off with carputer and a good screen. HD radio maybe XM if you want, plus whatever your music collection is, use phidgets/fusion brain/audrino with servo's, relays to control heating/air. Plus you could then use sensors to gather more info related to car monitoring. A good front-end to control all that and your good to go. I have not seen any carpc's that connect to bcm, only via obd2 port and thats really just for monitoring engine info. Just my 2 cents SNO

            The original 69 GTO had a HVAC system that was controlled by cables and vaccum. It has been removed and the plan is to replace it with the entire HVAC system from the G8, all of it. Both the pass compartment and engine compartment halves, the compressor setup on the engine itself, and of course the HVAC controls from the radio. The look of the G8 radio is one of the things that drew me to the interior. If I wasnt soo new to all of this CARPC stuff I would be down for doing it. I just want to keep a touch screen, the stock look, some of the stock functions, and the HVAC controls. I dont know anything about the CARPC stuff. I wouldnt even know where to start. I am doing lots of reading but I would rather buy something that is plug and play even if I had to pay someone to build it. Between the rest of the car needing finished I dont want to spend the weeks/months it would take me to try to setup the CARPC.

              You will have to reprogram the radio via TECH II to change the vin ID recognition.

              That will have to be accomplished to get it to even work as there is a "handshake/verification" done by the onboard computer via the lan.

              Not very hard, but you do need access to a TECH II unit.

              As for standalone operation, not very easy as the 69 is computer less.

              The earlier units could be "defeated" into stand alone operation by removing the identifier ROM.

                heavymetals, that is the kind of information I am looking for. A what do I need to do, what parts do I need, who can do it, who wants to do it for the extra cash. Kind of thing. I hate to take the easy way out of this but between being in Afghanistan for 5 more months, having to put the ENTIRE car together when I get back, having to fab up the turbo system and design my own fuel system, and having to do all of this before I start school full time.... I just need this one thing to be easy and it is turning out to be the biggest PITA hahaha. When I build the 70 Chevelle I am going to spend some time in engineering school learning all of this, but until then I need somone to do the leg work and make some coin doing it. Thanks for all the input so far!

                  Yes , GM screwed owners by making the radio part of the driving functions, HOW PHUCKING STUPID is that?

                  What you want is something that generates the handshake, and verifies the vin #.

                  Since it is a serial port, should be doable, but not easy.

                  I know the radio repair guys that are real good have can bus generator software just so they can operate the radio on the bench.

                    Yes that sounds about right. "You're DRUNK GM go home!" How not easy are we talking here, like 100s of hours of trial and error or just someone with the right motivation and a few weekends? I just found this, (http://www.alpine.com.au/showItem.php?item_id=246). I dont know if it is standalone and runs of its own information or if it plugs into the LAN and gathers information that way. I can only imagine that its the less applicable for me. I just sent an email to Alpine asking them direct. Any ideas?

                      I am trying to get my act together enough to build just such a plug in for the CTS-V.

                      However, what you want is the exact opposite, which is actually simpler.

                      What you need is to sniff the packet that handshakes the radio and also the radio return line.

                      The first link I posted does that.

                      It connects to a USB port and you save files as it captures them.

                      Then you can "replay" the file.

                      You don't care what the radio says back, just what commands are sent to unlock it, like wake up and vin verified.

                      Then you get some hardware that will simulate it.

                      You could probably do it via USB.

                      Like I said, the radio repair guys have a canbus generator that does this, so I know it can be done.

                      I saw one setup that used the serial port and two wires and just a bit of software.

                      If you want my opinion, it isn't going to be a weekend project.

                      I would install something else or I would modify the crap out of a stock looking one like I did to my radio.

                      The link you provided is to a system addition that itself works "standalone" but is connected to a system that is still connected to the bus.

                      I have heard some good stuff about the Parrot Asteroid unit.

                      Your problem is you need the can bus to be working to control the HVAC.

                      I would almost bet that the radio is just a display/input for the HVAC, but the control "brain" is not in the radio.

                      I would like to see what the HVAC control line is, and I bet it is not a simple radio to HVAC control loop.

                          I have the Camaro, and Both Metra, and Scosche made dash kits that have HVAC controls on it. I would think it would be easier to use one of the Metra kits to control the HVAC and just go with a standard DDIN radio of your choice. You would have to obtain the G8 wiring diagrams, and match up wires to the correct control signals if you used one from a different GM car.

                          Here is a photo of one I am modifying for fit for my new camaro, where the Metra 18 pin connector plugs directly into the 10 pin HVAC cable that comes from the HVAC module behind the glovebox.




                          That HVAC control interface controls all HVAC, heated seats, defroster, hazard flasher, and door locks.

                            It might be "easier" but not as "sexy" IMO

                            The OEM radio touch screen is what the OP wants.

                            Although, if one reads the FORD consumer feedback, touch screens are the #1 complaint.

                              That is actually not a bad Idea. I will keep that controller in mind in case it doesnt work out. I want the look of the original radio but if I can update the toch screen I think that would be even better. I looked into the Parrot screen. That DDIn is a good choice. I may have to start to weigh the options, but for now I need to stick to the plan.
