  • My First Carputer - Need some pointers

I'm going to be getting myself a new ride soon and I'll definately be putting a carputer in it. But i have a couple of questions.

I definately want to use a dc-dc power supply but am a bit sketchy on how to hook it up to the car. How would i go about doing this without putting it in a position to be fried? I have read some stuff about a voltage regulator but i don't know where to begin with one.

And how about hooking up a second battery? What type should i use cause i know car batteries are very good at one powerful surge but not good at constant use. I want to be able to turn on the computer without turning on the car. You know for when your just chillin and want to watch a kick *** fight scene or play a game. And I want it to be able to hold on for a while like the length on one part of lord of the rings.

Also how do I isolate the system from the main car battery so I can't drain it?

And lastly I don't want to be using a header unit, just the computer, so can i just convert the audio with like a minijack to composite and run it back to the amplifiers? and how do i deal with this on the center/sub channel? And can it be done so that i don't lose left/right and front/rear, so i'll get the full feeling of 5.1 surround sound when I play DVD's

Alright I'm still in the planning stages so money is no object yet.

    Help?

Did I post in the wrong forum or something? Cause no one has responded at all, and I have done research I'm just asking for the help of someone who has done it before.
And are there any ready made voltage regulators that i can just wire in, cause I haven't found any and I look ed on google all last night. Thanks for any help in advance.

I don't check the n00b section too often, so apologies from me!

As for power supply, take a look at theOpus DC-DC PSU. This is specifically designed for in-car computer use

Do a search here for tank circuit, should give you what you want for a second battery. (i've not done this yet, so don't know about it myself! )

If you get a 4 channel and a 2 channel amp, or a 6 channel amp, then you can run stereo mini-plugs to RCA which will plug into the amp(s), and you can keep your surround sound

        Hope some of that helps

get yourself one of those sb extigy cards and you'll be good. And the opus 150w ofcourse. You never know when you wanna add something to your carputer power supply. Like powering your screen off the psu directly?
          Mine needs to be updated.

That reminds me can i get a second psu and use it to power the monitor or will the first one be sufficient? I'm talking th 150w's btw. And I'm building with an older motherboard i'vr got laying around, it's a micro atx so i know it'll consume more power than a mini itx, but it'll cut some cost corners i hope. Thanks for all your replys.
