  • Hi all

Thought I'd introduce myself as I've just signed up.

Had a dabble with this in car PC lark back in 2000 by splitting an old Toshiba Portege laptop and fitting the 10.5" screen into the dash of my '87 XR2. IT worked well but at the time there was no decent input systems for it (I had a logitech wireless mouse and keyboard) so I soon got bored of it.

Recently saw the Xenarc touch screen VGA jobbie which, along with the advent of miniITX has got me interested in the project again although this time I'll be fitting it to my 306 Cabrio as the XR2 is more of a track car nowadays.

Mainly want it for mp3, email/MSN on the go (using ViaVoice and GPRS), and navigation but DivX and digital TV (if it's possible to get a decent signal in the car) would be great as I love the music video channels. Also like the idea of rolling up on my drive and having the PC sync with all my latest mp3s/DivX via the wireless AP in my loft.

Anyway, thats me. Hopefully I can be of help to someone! Some pics of the XR2 installation are at my site http://chrisw.net.

    Welcome, n00b!

First of all, i shall get the mandatory: Use the before you post blag...but, seriously, do some research, most questions have been answered. If you need some specific help, most people will respond better if you start a thread like so:

I have researched and found x, y, and z. However, this (a, b, c, d) is what I want it to do, how would i get x to do a and z to do c and d, and how best could I do b, and I don't know.....

Seriously, good to see another UKer, and near London at that

The best digital TV i've seen is a PCI card, will go dig up a link for you. However, I imagine to get any decent picture, you will at least need one of those "boomerang" style aerials, as on limo's, but then again, I am still unsure on the quality of the picture you will get.

I have the Xenarc touchscreen, using one of their coupons about a month back, I was able to get 2 700TS for £315 each, including shipping and the £100 customs they whacked on them, without the customs fee would have been £275 each.

As for software to use, check out the Software forum, there are many programs running around which should do most of what you want I am personally using my modified version of MediaEngine 1.7.7, which I have added many features to, including GPS via Destinator2, and a few other misc. features

      Hi Garry

Cheers for all the info. I run several forums and am a member of countless more so I'm well familiar with the 'search before you ask' thing

How do you find the Xenarc screen? Happy with it? I've heard reports that the touch is a little dodgy but I've never seen one in the flesh.

Friend of mine is thinking of importing the screens but minimum order is 10 so he's a little hesitant. They are likely to come out at £299 tho which sounds like a good price. Will see if I can pesuade him - otherwise I guess I need to look across the pond

        Chris,

The image of the display is nice. One of them had a dodgy touchscreen, but am getting the touchscreen controller board replaced by Xenarc. Good CS IMO. The other one, that does work, works very well. Neither myself nor my dad have had any gripes with it.

If I didn't have the screens already, then I for one would jump on the £299 price. My boss is doing a carputer as well (after seeing mine), and he would probably jump on the £299 screen, so that's 1 almost definate.

                Weclome ChrisW

Im too looking for a xenarc screen in UK, Ill need one soon...I hope But read up on the lilliput screen, it seems much better as they are much brighter.

I dont know if your friend can get enough buyers in UK though. I can import them, just too much hassle to stay with stocks for very little profits

I cant see the proper pics of your car on your site though

Funny I used to have an XR2 and a toshiba portege. How did you manage to stick that screen? Now I have an XR2i and still cant find a good place to put a xenarc sized screen.

I tried the hauppauge USB DBV tuner but it need a big antenna and cant get it to work properly in the car. The other problem is you have to keep retuning it as you drive to a different area.

The wireless lan...I tried it with US Robotics AP and PCMCIA card in the car, I cant get much signal...the car is only about 20m away. Its probably better to use an AP in the car too as they seems to have longer range. If possible external antenna.

                Off topics
The mods you done on your XR2 is I have modded my XR2i 8V and will be changing the head to stage 3 soon, Im using a piper cam right now. Any good advice on heads?

This is what Ive done on the car so far tell me what you think :

                Pipercam 285 camshaft
K&N Air filter cold feed induction
                Splitfire sparkplugs
Superchips (no power, just uses more fuel)
                FSE fuel pressure regulator
                Mongoose stainless exhaust system
Spax springs and dampers 30mm lowered
                OZ superleggera wheels 195 45R15
Red dots grooved brakes and pads(doesnt do much)

Any advice on clutch? gain more BHP? good setup? good supplier?

Im planning to use this car for trackdays as soon as me and bro finish the lancia stratos kitcar Ill most likely gonna strip the car and drop a 2 litre.

                Cheers

Sorry - thought there was a pic of the screen on my site. Have attached one below. I took out the radio and centre air vents and made a new panel out of fibreglass on an MDF skeleton.

Cheers for the comments about wireless and DVB. Will keep that in mind! First thing is to get a working PC in there

Re your car. A head will do a lot as you've already got the cam and a few other bits sorted. Have you got a proper 4-2-1 exhaust manifold on it or just a system? IMHO the next step would be to junk the standard injection and either run a proper mapable ECU with uprated injectors, or convert to 40's or even throttle bodies for that matter. With those bits you'd be looking at a real 130bhp at the wheels which is about as far as you'll go on that capacity without opting for forced induction.

                      Thanks for the info ChrisW.

Good job you done there Shame those toshiba screen are not very bright.

Yes I do have a 4-2-1 manifold. I already thought about throttle bodies with the stage 3 head. Not sure if the gain is worth the hassle...might be better off with an engine tranplant though

Any idea how much lateral g's your XR2 pulls going around corners? I bought an ADXL202 accelerometer evaluation board to be connected to my carpc. Having cornering hard Im reaching about 0.9 g quite easily. Not exactly 100% correct as the car tilts and therefore registering slightly more g's.

The lateral as well as braking and acceleration g's can be logged/observed on the screen..useful on race tracks. Calculating the car speed, engine RPM, acceleration, weight and drag should give me the BHP. I done some program based on labview to calculate these...still along way to go though.
