  • Anyway to control a carputer without a LCD??

Hey guys, I was looking to see if there was any other way to control a carputer. My '92 Sentra dash doesn't have much room at all for an LCD and I would really like to keep it looking stock if possible for security reasons. Anyone have any ideas? TIA

I just bought a pout screen to do exactly what you are after and its excellent, Its not that bright during day time but the image quality is exceptional and the touch screen is exceedingly responsive.

Contact Armen but be warned he may not have the stock and u may have a bit of a wait however the end result is worth the wait!

This is theonly type of pop out screen I have had any experience with but as I said its good, search the forum for others comments

    All the best

What do plan on using the pc for?

If all you want is an mp3 player, you can get a standalone HD unit with char lcd or an mp3 cd player.

Just want to play some MP3's. I have some extra computer parts laying around (Celeron 400, motherboard, etc.) that I would like to put to use. Thanks for all the suggestions/ I am going to look into the ALCAS.

I run a blind system, I have no idea what the hell is going on.

It behaves most of the time. It's a lappy in the glove box, and an IR remote (A "web remote profesional" - not recommended). I have it setup using girder so i can skip tracks, restart winamp, enque my usb key etc etc, I will add some sound feedback for status at some stage. but im in no rush. I just listen to my music and if i dont like the song i change it. IR/wireless remotes rock, and wont interfere with you stock locking interior.
I had a 24x2 charachter display and it was pretty sick, but i stepped on it and broke it =[. but i do recommend one, if you can find somwhere to mount it.

One tip, make sure your comp is stable, being blind can make it a pain in the arse when it crashes. =]

For a year or so my display was flakey(bad wiring job)...for about 3 months I had no display at all.

To administer the computer I had it on a wifi network, with TightVNC always up...so I just had to log in from the house to control it.

The rest of the time, I had winamp in the startup menu, with a resumer program.

I had the program wizmo assigned to a hot key for shutdown.

                Therefore...
press button and it boots and starts playing music...normal winamp keys control...hit hotkey to shut down for the day.

I used it this way for a LONG time...I finally completely redid my display wiring in august...so it work correctly all the time now.
                current projects

My first setup was a blind setup, old compaq p100 built to boot and start winamp automatically, and then just used a 21 key keypad in my center console to control it. Besides the inverter, my first rig was 100% spare parts.

You guys know when this site was started almost no one had a display?
                    My favorite control methods include
numeric keypad (works in dos with MX play gives killer boot time)
Game pad Need windows but easy setup
Com control wire some switches to a com port and use the winamp plug in
A character LCD is nice to have however it is not necessary.
I still have my CrystalFontz display installed from before I had a display. It is still great to have, works wonders when it's dark out and you don't want to light up the inside of your ride.
Man this is making me miss Arby and that group, even though I only lurked then.

I think the biggest function of people shifting to proper screens is their simple availibility. A few years ago, a composite video screen in your car was $$$ BLING BLING!, and thusly for many people working on a shoestring budget, outside of the realm of consideration. Now you can find 7" vga touchscreens for $350.

Sorry that I have not responded in a long time guys. DodgeCummins and MP3DUB, those ideas you posted are exactly what I was thinking of doing especially this:

My first setup was a blind setup, old compaq p100 built to boot and start winamp automatically, and then just used a 21 key keypad in my center console to control it. Besides the inverter, my first rig was 100% spare parts.

One thing I have not figured out, how can I get winamp to start/boot automatically? Can I assign a hot key for this from a winamp plugin or....???

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

                          could auto start winamp...
                          http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/109/
and then get a plugin from winamp that remembers the mp3 and location in the song everytime you close and open winamp (like a car cd player)
                          rebuilding carpc... kinda..

Just put a shortcut to winamp in the startup folder, and it will start with windows, and I've been using resumer as long as I've had a pc, its just about the handiest winamp plug in ever. Also, looking back through the lists of software i used, i also used two different plugins to map keys on the 21 key kepad to winamp functions (stop, play, next, jump 10, etc), one called Reproduction Control v1.28 and one called DIMIN HotKeys v0.2, but at this point i can't remember which one i used, ie which one worked well for my purpose.
