althou no veteran, would suggest this (logically)
From the choices you listed and if you have space in you car, I would suggest 2-5-8
If you don't have that much space and/or wanna mount the comp under the seat go 3-5-8

BUT if I were you, I would get a mini ATX mobo, custom case it and mount it under pas. seat. I personally find CarBox software the easiest to use, but many people like Media Engine, etc. So thats a matter of taste. For monitor search on ebay for Lilliput - cheapest.

Overall, just search for everything (lcd monitor, software, motherboards, touchscreen - whatever makes sense) and you should come up with lots of answers. Sometimes even too many, which makes it very hard to choose

As for car computer itself, I use my Espresso PC and I recommand those PCs. Either Espresso or Cuppuchino PC since they run on 9-15v DC and they are one piece unit and have everything you need built in. Cheaper to build and easier to carry around if you need to.

Thanks guys for your suggestions. I actually expected my request to somewhat ignored.

I've decided to go with the following for now:
              • VIA EPIA Nehemiah M10000 1Ghz All In One Motherboard
              • 512MB 266Mhz DDR SDRAM PC2100 CL2.5
              • 60gb slim hdd

I will test this out until I fork out more $ for the LCD and such.

Please keep any other suggestions coming.

*On a side note...Being that this is going to be an install within a 2003 Ford SportTrac and I have yet to see one done. I'm thinking of documenting my progress and posting it at some future time.

looks good. do you have an existing audio setup there already(not the OEM, something like amps, sub etc.)?

I've got the Pioneer premium upgrade (by mistake at no charge) with the truck.
This systems has a small amp already installed behind the rear seats hooked up to a 6" sub.
I'm definately going to upgrade this once I'm sure my hookup works.
Although money is not really an issue I still don't want to burn it all at once. I'm verry content making baby steps with this hookup but will hopefully have it all within a month.

About the software, there are so many free/excellent solutions. Seraphs aiPC, coyote's MediaCar, anything under the software section, i think FrodoPlayer will soon make it's debut. Media-z runs under linux, and if you plan on running linux there is the DashPC software, along with myth (i believe linux users?). In short, there are many free options that are just as good if not better than ones that charge.
