  • How to Turn Computer On and Off

    Alrite i was searching around the forums and would like to put a computer in my car for music. The computer would be no problem, I'm a computer techie but I am still confused as to how I would turn the computer on and SAFETLY off. Turning It on wouldn't be hard(I could just extend the wires for the on switch) but turning it off is where I don't get how you'd do it? I mean you could just cut power to it but I dont want to do that and I want to be able to shut it down and be able to leave the car, have it shutdown, and not be sucking juice form my battery.

    use the soft off, you push the switch and it shuts down the pc.
    you can also have it done autamaticly with 3 bosh relays.
    now working on my Dodge Dak
    toshiba portege == done
    audigy2 NX == done

      that's the first i've seen of that relay circuit ... interesting.

      if you wire a pushbutton windows will shut down gracefully when you push the button.

      or there's circuits that can do this for you. they can be bought or built. search for shutdown controller or shutdown circuit

              If you are running windows XP you can just set it to use the power button safely shut down http://www.techtv.com/screensavers/w...409297,00.html

                Exactly what I was going to suggest.

                  I thought it was something more spectacular.

                      Shutdown controller would work too. Jeff's one, you can search for it this time.

                        Bah. Shutdown control is no big thing. As long as you aren't attempting to write your resume' while you drive, you can usually safely do a rude shutdown (pull power) with no bad effects.

                        Been doing it under 98SE for years, and XP seems just as ready to accept it's fate to a lifetime of shutdowns without warning. At least, according to tests here in the mad scientist's lab.

                        If you are concerned about corruption, then all versions of Windows, 98 and up, will allow you to power the system down nicely by tagging the same button you used to power it up! Check out your screensaver settings window, click the Power button at lower right, then click the Advanced tab at top. Use the dropdown to tell Windows what it should do when you hit the power button.

                        Plain. Simple. End of story/thread! W00t!

                          the first relay will activate one relay or the other one when the IGN is on, the other when it is off. the other two relays are set up for a constant in with momentary out. with the 1K uf cap will make the circuit will be compleat for about 1/2 a second, the bigger the cap the longer its on. with 30 as power - and 87 as + when one relay is activated the circuit is compleat. so if the car is off and you turn it on it will activate a relay completing the circuit and turning the power on, when you turn the ign. off it will shut down the pc and turn its self off.

                          and i dont think you will need the 87a.
