well... that's a very broad question, but the generally accepted idea of an emulator usually pertains to gaming. You can get emulators for all of the old consoles, and most if not all of the original games that were played on them, from the Atari 2600, right up through DreamCast and beyond. I have emulators and games for Commodore64, Nintendo, and Sega Genesis.

They are generally free, but you have to look around a little. Check out some of the popular p2p sharing programs out there. Of course, in order for you to know exactly what you're looking for, is your best friend. Never fear it, for it shall lead the way to your very dreams!

Also, bear in mind, that obtaining and using the games to play on these emulators is considered illegal in the same fashion that downloading mp3s without paying for them is illegal, except that there is no way that I know of to legally buy a gamefile for an emulator.

Yeah. I'm not sure if this thread will get deleted or not, but, to Cliff Notes deadweasel, basically an emulator will let you play games and run software that is meant for a system other than the one you are running them on. To do this, you'll need emulator software (called an emulator, oddly enough) and a game file, called a ROM. If you want to then emulator and roms, plus the system you're trying to emulate (SNES? NES? Atari? Old MAME arcade games?) are good google terms to use.

Emulators can also be used to emulate other operating systems too.

While very true, I specifically didn't mention that, because if he has to ask what an emulator IS, he sure isn't going to be very able to use one to run another OS yet!

No offense XTRMEASURES. This is the sort of thing you learn by screwing with it, and the gaming side is the easiest way to get started. Besides, I get the feeling that's what you were looking for in the first place, ne?

I didn't even know there was a working XBOX or PS2 Emulator. If you actually own the game then it is not illegal. Say I own Sonic The Hedgehog for whats it called...Sega Genesis and I download the ROM. It is perfectly fine because I own it. So if you own the Xbox or PS2 game and you know where to get the emulator then go for it. Having the game would probably be the easiest way to play it because a ROM for a Xbox or PS2 game would be well over 650 MB. I know that you can "hack" a Xbox and make it in to a computer where it can do everything (plus play Xbox games) that a car PC can do.

As far as I know, there are no Xbox and PS2 Emulators. I could be wrong. I have not been in the emulator scene for a while. I do have bleem PSX emulator and it works well but only on winme and win98.

I also have bleem for dreamcast. Cool stuff.

I'm not quite sure. I don't have one. Check out: www.xbox-scene.com www.xemulation.com and if you want the newest issue of 2600 .

That's the great thing about being a n00b (newb, noob, NEWBIE whatever): everyone starts out as one! Well, for emulation in the car, that might be a little beyond what you may be willing to deal with for XBox. PCs can't pull off XBox stuff too well (crappy HALO port for PC anyone?), mainly thanks to a specialized processor. If you're looking for gaming in the car, you would be better off just sticking the XBox in there, although I personally am terrified of the thought of games in a car. Did a laptop in the car once for my sister, going from Detroit to Arkansas to visit mom. I had the "joy" and "unending pleasure" of listening to Sonic the Hedgehog and Bart vs The Space Mutants the whole 10 hour trip there. Ack.
Do yourself a favor: leave the games at home, or at least out of your car!

Damn. I have to go to the store tomorrow now. I missed the 2600. I have every issue since 97.

I'll check it out. It would be interesting.

Via Linux or Windows 2000 and a USB cable (the front ports are actually USB ports). It's nuts what people have gotten running on the X-Box sine it's so PC like.

As far as I know, there are no Xbox and PS2 Emulators. I could be wrong.
There's at least two PS2 Emulators for PCs, been a while since I looked, so there may be more than two now. I'm not sure either were running comercial games, or just demos.

i disagree as you will fond that the xbox is a generic celeron 700 cpu not specialized at all. Though I will agree that a game designed for xbox will usually be crap on the pc and vice versa. I think it would not be too bad to play xbox (look for xmame) games on carpc as my missus like games it means i could quite possibly have a good trip
