  • Making a cheap Carputer, LCD mounting confusion.

    Hey guys,

I'm new to the forums and I would like to build a cheap Carputer for my 2000 VW Passat. I've been looking at screens and I'm curious as to how people mount them. There is a DIN mount version on digitalww.com and that would be awesome but I would like to use the TM 700VGA screen instead. Is it possible to mount it without drilling holes? Does the LCD stand attach inside the empty DIN spot?

What exactly is the "Automotive Bracket for easy installation and stand"?

I'd like to use a keyboard mounted on the sun visor to save money on a touch screen. How would you mount this on?

I plan on using MapPoint 2004 with AGPS for navigation, would that be compatible with the front end programs available? (Media engine, etc)

I think I'm going to use the Opus power supply, it's expensive but I think the features make up for it. Unless someone has a better suggestion. I saw some threads mentioning a UPS and I have a small ~300VA or so one...Can I get auto standby/hibernate easily without the Opus when I shut down the car?

I have a lot to learn so sorry about the large number of questions. I'd be really grateful if someone could help a newbie out here. Thanks

If you are looking for cheapness you should stop looking at the VGA screens and go with RCA. If you go with RCA you can purchase a 1 din motorized pop out Screen for less than a VGA (i have seen them in ebay ). VGA touch screens run about $350 usd. THe lilliput is the popular screen around here.

I belive that it is a housing that the screen will pop into that mounts in a 2 DIN spot.

I would use some sort of clips that you could glue on the back of the keyboard for easy removal.

    That should work fine

      Thanks for the reply!

Regarding the cheap comment earlier I meant I wanted to save money on the LCD mostly, I do not want to shell out $400 for a touch screen 7 inch. On the digital WW site there are 7 inch VGA LCDs that go for about $240 with free shipping.

So the bracket takes up TWO din slots? Hmmm...my car has only 3 din spots and 2 of them are being taken up by the head unit and climate control.
