  • I took the first steps.

OK, I asked a question last week about hard drives and got several helpful answers. So, I was at the computer store last weekend and decided to take the plunge. This is my first attempt so I didn't want to go crazy with it. They way I'm looking at it now (and explaining to my girlfriend) is that at this point, if I decide to turn back and not do this, then all of the parts I've accumulated won't go to waste.

I also went to the hardware store and picked up some plexiglass. Unfortunately, I only have hand tools, so I had to make due with what I had. I spent last weekend putting my case together and it actually turned out pretty decent. I still need to add a few things, but overall I'm pleased with my first attempt.

All I'm waiting for now is a processor for my mobo. I need to find a Duron 800-1000 on ebay. Not that hard and pretty cheap. After that I should be up and running.

I've already loaded the hard drive with WinXP and my small music collection.

My next step is to post a question in the power supply forum... perhaps after I've used the feature some more. Then I'll start looking into screens and how I' going to control this thing. Many options there.

So.. thanks again for the help.

would an 1100 Athlon (non-XP) do you any good? I happen to know where there is one collecting dust

What size hard drive did you decide on?

Glad to hear you took the plunge! You are now officially sucked in to our fine hobby!

what do you know that i don't that allows you to pre-install operating systems on motherboards other than the one it is going to live happily ever after on?

It's an honest question, btw...if you can do that i'd love to know how...

I'd be glad to take that off your hands. You can even keep the dust.

Let me check the specs to make sure that will work with my mobo. I'll send you a PM shortly.

Relax, I just formatted and partitioned out the drive. I dumped XP on there just to make sure all was well. I didn't load drivers and everything else. Sorry, didn't come up with a new miracle method.
