I solved it (just a little newb aftershock)

anyways, I need a notebook IDE to desktop IDE converter..
    ala http://www.mini-itx.com/reviews/2677R/page3.asp

But which one do i need?

I'm trying to go from the slimline Ide to a desktop IDE to a 44pin IDE to usb2 adapter to my computer. I have the IDE(44) to usb, I just need to get my slim CD Rom converted to IDE.

    Here are some i've found:

actually it turns out you need a laptop to desktop adapter too...

the entire conversion is as follows:

        slim ide---> 44pin Ide (laptop) ---> 40 pin Ide (desktop)---> Usb2

Am i going to have any problems with it changing that many times?

How does the audio get to the computer, or does that also go through the ide to usb?

            Will i need anything else?

The pic shows that one needs a power supply?

Also i wana stay away from the case bulkyness, cause its going behind the
dash and theres hardly any room as it is.

Yep... DC Output: 5V. I believe one of the wires on a Molex connector is 5 volts.

But i thought with most USB connections the item gets its power threw the usb from the computer.

Like my usb hub, it comes with a power source but I dont use it, the usb powers it.

that only works for low power devices. Most usb hard drive and cd drives need additional power. There are a few exceptions but most of the time, you need more power. There are some enclosure kits for 2.5 hard drives that draw power from the usb bus but I dont think it is enough for a cd. Could be wrong though...

There are USB DVD/CD drives that don't require a power source other than the USB. The Targus Slim USB 2.0 DVD drive that I just received doesn't require anything but the USB for power.

                          This drive is only 5V

yeap, there are tons of usb/1394 drives that do not require power to, but they are huge and are not slot loading.

What i was was trying to see is if i can get my slimline slotloading combo drive to work without a case and having to use external power.

Or does anyone know if there is a slimline case that will make it usable without power other than from the usb/1394? Im just going 3' the most.

Check the power requirement of the Laptop CD Drive, if it is less than 5mA then you are good to go, just connect the USB 5v to the 44-40 IDE cable and it will be powered off the USB.

I'm pretty sure the USB spec is 500mA, not 5mA.
