  • General Questions

I've been viewing parts of the sites and have a few general questions about carpcs and other enhancements.

1.) What is GPS in general and whats it used for?

2.) Aside from mp3s/movies/internet what other major purposes does having a carpc serve?

3.) I've read a few posts about radar and radar detectors? Are these for detecting cop cars? I'm very interested in anti police technology.

4.) Are their any other enhancements that rate high on the cool/usefulness factor that haven't mentioned?

5.) Any ideas or links to creating easily accesible concealable compartments for well things you don't want cops to find should you get pulled over?

(note: I'm basically just pothead/tech enthusiast that has a growing interest in 'all this james bond ****'.)

Also is this hobby really advanced from an automotive/wiring perspective or can the basics be learned relatively easily? I'm into computers and all but pretty much never messed with cars before.

I searched google and this site a bit but mostly found posts about howto install this stuff or well too detailed information ... I just want general answers as I'm curious what exactly some of this stuff is used for.

    Thanks in advanced.

well i never said i necessarily wanted the compartment because i was hiding or promoting something illegal. Lets just say I have some naked pictures of my wife and other 'embarassing objects' that I wouldn't want a cop to see and wouldn't want on my persons if I should be searched ;/

No monthly fee. Just buy a receiver and the software and you never have to pay again.

If you pay US federal taxes, GPS isn't quite free...
Any GPS reciever will work without any subscription, at least until the US military decides to turn it off.

I actually think it'd be kinda fun thinking up secret compartments. Still, that's not what this site's about.

The "Service" is free. all you need is a receiver to hook up to you computer. The receiver is inexpensive, but the navigation software is a little chunk of change (correct me if I'm wrong). just pull down the search tab in the forums and start searching. If your realy interested in the hobby, theres no better place than this site.

Actually the receivers are pretty expensive themselves. I think the cheapest I have seen them are the ebay ones that go for about $60 (like I said that is the cheapest I know of). You are correct about the price of the navigation software. Most of it is pretty expensive (~$100)

I knew the receivers were around 100 dollars, but I thought the quality software
was around $200 or $300. Am I wrong?

                  nice

thanks much appreciated for the comments. I mainly just wanted to know more about GPS as I never really read anything in detail about it. I thought it was used exclusively by the military and for airplanes.

                  Yeah I'll search the site.

Also 60 bucks is no problem I assumed it'd be something like that. Should I decide to go through with this I'm prepared to shell out around 500ish or so dollars. I have a lot of semi-old computers lying around and a lot of newer stuff that I can use for the actual PC already.

I hope that is some kind of joke. No one is that dumb.
