  • Dumb USB DVD question

Ok. I've been told there are no dumb questions so here I go. I am looking to install my comp in the trunk and locate the CDRW/DVD drive up front. looking at USB powered drives. I need to know if the only thing I need is to run 2 wires. one USB for data and the other USB for the power? is the Audio sent over the USB? or do I need to run an audio cable to the sound card like my internal CD drive I already have in my comp? hope thats not too dumb a question.

most likely if its usb powered, the power and data will run on the same cable. and yes, the audio is sent over usb as well.

On the contrary, they typically need two USB cables. (Mine does anyhow) Here's the kicker, they gave me a power cable which is two feet long and a USB cable which is 6ft. I guess it says some computers can power it without the power cable and some can't, my VIA MII 10000 canot power it without the second cable, I'd love to tell you the type of USB dvd player I have but I'm not at home and I can't remember off the top of my head.

Audio gets played over the USB though.

Some drives require a second USB cable. You could run both or run one and add a powered hub to the end of it. That would give you a second port for the power and at least two additional ones for other USB devices up front.

The audio will be sent digitally through the USB cable as long as the drive supports it (most do) and you have the drive setup that way in the device properties.

You could just extend a 5 volt rail off your PSU to the DVD drive and hack open the power usb cable and splice em together. That's what I did and it works perfectly. So you'd have two wires going up - usb for data and probably 18awg speakerwire for the 5 volt & ground line off your PSU up to the spliced power USB cord. I can post a pic if I'm not being clear.
