  • N'CTRL needs your help...help him put together his car PC..!!

Make it like you're teaching a 4 year old girl to put one together. Ok, make that a barely 18 school girl, but don't get too distracted.

Anyway, that pretty much describes the level I am on. I don't have a huge clue about how to build/assemble/create one. I have been planning one and reading about them for months now, so I guess I have a general idea.

That said, I have a 2002 WRX, and plan on running the Xenarc touchscreen and Opus power supply (but 90W or 180W ). Other than that, I think a 60G or 80G lap top hard drive should be sufficient, but where to get one?

What programs to I use? I want to run a GPS set up as well.

Those who know the WRX, I'd like to mount everything behind the screen in the space where the double din radio was. I think I can do this on my own using the factory chassis, but help me pick my parts. I also want to run a slim load DVD/CD-R drive and maybe two USB ports behind the glove box.

I am very hands on and can fabricate things, so that isn't an issue.

I also, if at all possible, would like to run the factory speakers, what's the easiest way to do this?

Ok, all that said folks, line up the parts for me.
If it's at all possible, a place to get them would be cool to. I have a friend that works at CompUSA so I get discounts there as well.

Here is a diagram of what I know so far, it's poor, but it works.

    TIA

Also, I don't want to run an aftermarket head unit. Is there a way to still get the local radio stations?

You can buy alot of the parts you need online. You'll probably find better deals online than at CompUSA. A good place to start is the mp3car store and ebay.

Which program/frontend you use all depends on what feature your looking for. I suggest you download all of them are try them out and see which one you like.

You can use your factory speaker without buying an new headunit. If your current head unit has an aux in you could use that to get the audio from the computer. If not you could use a 4 channel amp to get sound to the speakers.

I suggest you read up a little more, there is alot of information here and you will find your answers easily. See if you can find the answers you are looking for, if you can't then try to post more specific questions.

          Ok, thanks.

I have no problem ordering online.

I ask here because I know there's a few people who have done what I'm looking to do on their WRX.

As for the speaking thing, I've heard of using a 4 channel amp. I just have to figure out how to hook it up I guess. I can't use my stock head unit as that's where the screen and hard ware will be.

Another thing i'm confused by is how to power the carputer? Where/how do I source it.

Prepare to get flamed. I will refrain this time because you are a lost cause.

Edit: Ah ****it. What the hell. Your gonna have to invest a **** load of time into this. DO NOT ask someone to do all the work for you. Before I ever posted I downloaded all the software. Yes everyone of them. And ran them on my home pc just to see what each one included. I suggest you do that. The rest is up to you. Find the model you want, then go to http://www.froogle.com and find the lowest price. I really doubt you will ever get that far so this is probably a waste of time for me. But oh well. How the hell do you think you could use your stock speakers? Get an amp and hook it up - thats how. This is a very expensive hobby so unless your prepared to spend a lot of time and money, dont attemp it. Is it just me or does it seem that there has been a tremendous influx of these type of posters lately? Did someone post this website on an MTV show or something to bring in all these people? Something must have happened.

You can still use your stock head unit even if your putting the screen in its place. You can relocate it somewhere else like your glovebox. It depends on how much money you want to spent. It may be cheaper to use your stock head unit, but it may be easier to hook up a amp to the speaker.
              Take a look here. http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=32430

To power the carputer, you already mentioned the opus. You hook up the car battery to the opus and connect the opus to the computer like a regular power supply.

Read up in the newbie sections alot of your question have alread been answered.

I got a nice plexi carputer for sale
just add a touchscreen, and maybe a keyboard, gps, and wifi.

And it just so happens that I built it to fit under the passenger seat of a WRX!

Calm down buddy. Don't need to get all wilded up. If you don't feel like helping then don't. I'm not saying you need to spoon feed people, but instead point them in the right direction so they can find there answers. There no need to discourage people from picking up a good hobby.

Search the "Show off your project" forum using the term "WRX". There are several there that will give you ideas of where and what type of hardware you might need.

look here -> http://www.tmz.com/wrx/carcomputer.html he is doing exactly what you are talking about.

I also, if at all possible, would like to run the factory speakers, what's the easiest way to do this?
easiest way I have found is use the AUX input on a aftermarket head unit. But in the FAQ section
Audio Input FM Modulators, Transmitters, Tape adapters, and Auxillary Input
are described in detail as to how they work.

                        What programs to I use?
I have search this forum and used google to find carpc software, I decided on frodoplayer since it did what I was looking for and was easiest for me to use. But download and try them all on your home PC to see which you like.

I have found the following sites to be good for parts.

                        www.mp3car.com
                        www.logicsupply.com
                        www.newegg.com

once you pick your parts out you can use a power calculator to find out what size of Power Supply you should use.
                        http://www.jscustompcs.com/power_supply/

I plan on the same thing you are doing, and if you go for a 7" liliput touch screen you can go to http://www.tmz.com/wrx/ordering.html and order a bezel kit, or pay him extra and ship him your screen and he will mod it for you.

I am doing that and I have already moved my Kenwood CD player to where the dash clock was using the stock gauge pod from www.subaruwrxparts.com

Someone else has done what I just described on this site(where I got the idea) and the setup looks sweet!

feel free to PM if you have any questions, I am new but seeing as you have a WRX and I do we can compare notes and figure more things out.

I was just about to say.....if you have seen some stuff that interests you, PM the person who did it....sure it might be a general question, but i fy ou PM them chances are they will answer you before they would on some open forum....

I can't tell you how many people I have had PM me with such basic questions as "WOAH!!! HOW DID YOU DO THAT!?!?!?!" lol

it sounds like you have a better idea on what you want than most n00bs...lol

continue reading, and look at what other people have used in their set-ups, if you are curious, PM them and ask them how they like it and if they have had any problems....sometimes people are more willing to discuss problems on a one on one basis rather than on the forum

I highly doubt that anyone will just list everything that THEY think you should get....it's kind of a pride thing on this forum for some people, to be able to say that their set-up is unique...

By doing the research to find out what will work best for you, you will learn a lot in the process and have a better understanding about what's going on in your car
