  • Better OS for carputer.....2000 or XP?

Perhaps this is somewhat of a subjective question, but I'm hoping there may be some distinct functional differences I'm not aware of........

That said, here's the question....in the carputer environment what would be a better operating system, Windows 2000 or Windows XP? (looking forward, I'd like to use Frodoplayer)

    Thanx, D

    xp PRO by far.
I have used both and XP pro is easier to configure down.

I'd go with XP Home, not much different then Pro, in fact there are very few pro features that I could see you using in a car enviroment. 2k boots way to slow and it's an older OS.

if you want speed go for windows 98/me, has not as many things to load as others.

but everything has its down falls eg.. unstable.

xp home would be better as there is nothing for you to benfit from pro. just tweak it too the max!

I suggest Windows 2003 It runs so much faster when tweaked! GNU/Linux would be great if there was enough frontend support =\
CarPC install is starting to come along again...

Define faster. Do you mean boot time, or app switching, responsiveness?

2003 servers good, but far too expensive for the car!

XP Home is a good bet for the cheap licensing

to check feed back - I got a legal XP Pro for $75

I would love to use linux - but it does not lend it self well
to in car use - and if you have used windows all your life
like 90% of us - the linux command line is like a foreign
                        language

Stay the hell away from ME!

Well, I believe all three. But the most noticeable difference I have found in responsiveness/app switching.

I didn't pay for 2k3, I got the Evaluation Beta off of the MS site and then injected 2k3 corporate files into it when it came out

id go with xp (pro or home doesnt matter as far as carpc use imo) simply because of speed, stability, and hibernation all rolled into a sleek OS.

I find that weird since the OS was designed as a server and is more then likley not optimized for foreground tasks and window switching. I would tend to think that XP with the skinning turned off and only the services you need running would be just as quick if not quicker for apps that you are running and switching through in realtime in the foreground.
