  • Is this a good idea?

This seems too simple, but I thought I would ask the experts for their opions. I want to put a carputer in the Tahoe - mp3, DVD, nav - maybe later on OBD-II. I already have a 10.4" touch screen, but I don't have a computer. I was looking at Dell's refurbished units - should be able to pick up a decent desktop for $300 - P4 2.0, 512Ram, 40 gig HD, DVD, bla bla bla.

I am thinking I can pick one of these up, build my own case and install the components - granted I will need a power supply and a decent sound card.

Is this a good idea, or should I try to buy individual parts and assemble once I have everything?

    *edit*

I would also need to pick up the stuff for Nav...

It's a good idea. No, wait. It's a bad idea.

Depends on what you want to do with the system. Are you asking if you can run a desktop system in your car? Yes you can.

What's your criteria for "goodness"? Power consumption, price, size, etc?

Give us a little more info.

BTW is the touch screen a desktop model or one for the car? Just asking as the brightness of a desktop model isn't always sufficient for carp applications. Plus, that's BIG! Are you going to put it in your dash?

Them Tahoe's are large, you need a Honda Civic just to get from drivers seat to passengers seat.
I have found you an argument; I am not obliged to find you an understanding.

        hmmmm my criteria...

I would like the case to be small - slim I think is a better word. When I picture the finished product in my mind - I see something similiar to the new style Play Stations.

Obviously, cost is a factor - I don't want to pay more than I have to, but I have learned the lesson 'you get what you pay for' the hard way many times. If going the desktop route and then fitting it with the required power supply and other things turns out to be more expensive, I will want to build my own.

I don't think I am wanting anything too complex. Just enough storage for mp3s, a DVD drive, enough Ram and processor speed to handle the apps (mp3 player, navigation, etc.) No gaming, no internet, no OBD-II(at least for now)

I was just looking at dell and saw a couple for $300 or so and thought that wasn't a bad price. Figure another $100 or so for the power supply, another $200 for the gps receiver and software - would I be better off building one that is more tailored to a car application?

As far as the screen - it is for a car - not from a desktop. I plan on putting it in the dash - the lower console where the double pockets are. At first I was going to put a 7" there, but it was just too small. I think with a little bit of work, the 10" will fit perfectly!

First, I see you are from Springfield which is about 5 miles from my house. I'm happy to show you my setup if you'd like. You should also check into the DC area meet that will take place at Great Falls on the 30th. You'll see several installs.

For the size/performance that you're looking for, an Epia M10000 will fit the bill. They're pretty small and can be had for around $150. You'll have to add memory, a hard drive, etc.

Yeah, I would love to see your install - as my girlfriend probably would too (she just got her 1999 Beetle this past weekend). Let me know what your schedule is like and I can work around that.

Unfortunately I won't be able to make the meet on the 30th.
