  • installing XP to a clean drive

Just got a blank laptop drive and thought I would install and set everything up on my Desktop before I attatch it to my M1000 MB. Now I put the Bios to boot from the CD rom first and I put in the Windows CD but it keeps saying "Missing Operationg System" Anyone know why Windows Disk isn't starting up? Am I doing something wrong?

Do you really want to do that. If you do you will install all the drivers and stuff for the wrong motherboard, video and sound

But if you still want to make sure you go into BIOS and boot from CD is selected before C: drive

I'd go with krustydawg. I wouldn't recommend you install Windows on that hard drive until it's with the M1000 MB. Windows has a hard time switching motherboards.

Make sure your CD-ROM is the first boot device. Make sure your WinXP CD is a bootable CD (not a burnt/copied CD).

XP will not work once you switch the motherboard. Once XP see's so many hardware changes it will assume you are trying to install on multiple machines and it will not authenticate your CD key and it will want you to call microsoft for a manual activation which is a huge PITA.

I highly doubt it, I've done it multiple times with no problems.

although i havent had it happen to me (ive transffered a hard drive between 2 computers which both have similar specs. one is a gateway, another is dell. about same age), ive also been told that xp will have a hissy when the motherboard changes. better if you install it on the M1000.

yes install it on the itx board and if it is a burnt copy. Get Ultra iso make it an image then go into nero and burn image correctly. Meaning go into nero burning rom and x out of what pops up then go to Recorder then Burn Image. Then click on the iso you have just made and there ya go.
