  • Carputer Advice Needed

I am looking into building my first carputer. I will be putting this in my 99 Hyundai Tiburon, and if all goes well I will build another for my 2005 Scion XB. I would like to build a MicroATX system so that if I want to I can bring it in the house. I think I would like to keep my headunit, possibly relocated, and use the auxilary input for the sound from the computer.

Here is what I have come up with so far:

MSI K&N2GM-V Socket A NVIDIA nForce 2 IGP Micro ATX
    WD Caviar SE WD800JD 80GB SATA150
    Rosewill 512MB DDR PC3200
    AMD Mobile Athlon XP-M 2200+ (35W)
Athenatech A100SC.200 MicroATX with 200W PS

I would like a 7" touchscreen VGA for control/visuals. More than likely would be putting in a laptop style DVD drive underneath the monitor. All I seem to be able to find for these though is the tray load, does anyone make a slot load?

I already have a GPS setup and software to run with it, as well as a external OMNI wireless antenna. The antenna I have was used for hooking to an Orinoco PCMCIA 802.11B card. Are there any PCI cards that will allow me to use this antenna?

I've got Windows XP Professional, Home, and Media Center Edition. Which would you use? Or would you go with a Linux based OS?

Firts who said that you can no bring a ITX system in to the house....??

The OMNI ant can be use if you change the connector to fit the PCI card.

Some people here like to go with fix OS like (lite, minilogon) and some other like to have full OS (winxp) 'cause since home is a reduce copy of Pro and MC it just have some adds to make look more user friendly towards media interaction................I will say think what you going to be doing with the car pc and choose drom there.

I will be using it mainly for music, video, and navigation. I will occasionally use it for databasing and invoicing for my business. I would like to be able to synch with my home computer when I pull into the drive way. So I am thinking Windows XP would probably be the best to have loaded on it. Maybe a dual boot with linux so I can offer wireless security audits to my customers. I am good at building home computers and servers so mainly what I need assistance with is the power supply portion.
