  • Is this laptop worth anything?

I have this laptop laying around at home. I dont' know if it works or not because I don't have a power cord for it. Do you guys think it would be worth the money to buy the power cord to see if it works? Would it be a good carputer?

a little on the slow side for a carpc, running XP anyways, but probably worth the money for a power supply as use for a portable web browser or something....

fast enogh for most of that...movies would be the test.....i had a p3 400 meg compaq laptop and i could watch dvd,s on it. just.... just a little jerky .
obd doesnt need a fast processor as it is low baud rate anyway... gps should be no prob either.
it all depends on what operating system you are going to use...
how much ram and of course how much hdd space you are going to use... from memory it said only 6 gig???

I still say a little on the slow side.... not unusable... but slow enough to be frustrating at times & with all the other frustrating things that can & will pop up on a car pc install, why add another stumbling point... not to mention all the work that goes into setting up an install... when your done I think you would want better results than this would give.... It can defanately work though.....

Ofcourse you can use it, rip it apart and use the screen and mount it in car roof..perfect for backseat ppl to watch movies..there is adapters available for using a 3.5" harddrive with that MB.

A laptop is designed to be low in powerconsumption an more resistant to condensation and such...perfect!

What you need is a "lightweight" OS to run it..

                    Go for it!

Yeah, that laptop would work. What I would do is do a fresh install of windows and dont install anything else. Since its a sony it probably has a restore disc, if at all possible don't install any of the extra software that they put on the disc, just windows. You may have to go into add/remove programs and delete some stuff that they are going to put on there anyways. After that you are going to want to your display properties --> appearacne --> effects and turn off the fade effect. I have noticed that it makes slow computers lag just trying to pull up the windows menu and other windows.

And then you are going to want to disable as many services as you can, here is a list of services that are safe to turn off

                      window services

After that I would install all the programs that you want to use, gps, mp3 player, dvd player, front end, etc. and then see if the computer operates at a speed that is ok with you, try running a couple of programs at the same time, such as mp3 palyback and gps. I would also see if you can put more ram in the machine.
