  • Help with fontend for Newb!

Hey all I am new to this site and working on setting up a car pc in my 99 civic. I am looking for a frontend to install and I have searched and read through hundreds of posts, but I couldnt find a specific answer. I have never messed with code in a program and I am wondering how hard it is to set up roadrunner? Is there some way to just download a working version and modify it as I learn how? TIA!

Welcome to the forums. I think you'll be able to figure out Road Runner. You posted in the Newbie section, so here's freebie link: Road Runner download FAQ

You'll find that in a section of the forum that is all about Road Runner and there are a list of FAQs about it as well.

Also, if you haven't checked out the FAQ Emporium, click on the link in my signature and you'll be taken there.

    Welcome!

Thanks for the reply I have been searching through the FAQ section and everything I read says you download something then you have to tear into the code. Is this only to change the skin? Will it function before doing all the coding??

        Bugbyte,

In many ways I am a newbie too and it always helps when a complete and to the point response such as yours is posted because then everyone benefits. So I thank you too!

I've use Frodoplayer but downloaded and tested Road Runner about 2 months ago. I don't remember having to tear into the code.

          Give it a try!

Ok I did a bunch more reading and downloaded allkinds of stuff. Now here's my next question. I downloaded and installed Mediacar and it works, but I know there is limited support on that now. So I would rather use roadrunner, but when I dowloaded that and tried to install it wont open??? I double click on it and the computer acts like it trying to open it then nothing! I then read the tutorial and it said I needed winamp? Would media car run if I didnt have winamp? Help a dumb newb out!!

Check C:\program files\ to see if you have the winamp folder. If you don't then download an early version and install. Then go to http://www.majesticpw.com/roadrunner/Index.html
and download and install the installation program...you are basically done! The default configuration setting should work. If not, go to config window and set the loaction of winamp. Now you are done!

You downloaded AND installed Winamp, right? Road Runner controls Winamp so if it's not installed, Road Runner won't work.

Easy way to tell if Winamp is installed is that you ought to find it in your program folder. Launch it on it's own and see if it works. You'll probably have to set it up to tell it where your music files are. Once that works, reinstall Road Runner and it should work fine.

It's a little work but Road Runner is in rapid development. There's new stuff for it all the time.

Ok I just redownloaded roadrunner and it started to install and froze right near the end!! I tried reinstalling a few times and it freezes in the same spot everytime?? Do I maybe not have enough memory to install it? I looked in the task manager and it is using 100% memory when it just stops. This comp is old and only has 384 MB of ram.

Are you running win 2000 or XP? I am not 100% on this but I think RR may not run unless you have one of these OS.

                          Did you run RRConfig first?

When you unpack/install RoadRunner, there's a Readme.txt file. I followed the instructions at the top and it worked fine the first time. I'll paraphrase them here:

                          1) Install Media Player Classic (I don't know what this is, I have Windows Media Player 9 already so I didn't do anything)
                          2) Install WinAmp. (On someone's advice I installed some older version, 2.95. Make sure winamp is working, run it manually, c:\program files\winamp\winamp.exe)
                          3) You need at least one skin installed. (I don't remember whether I had to do this or not, but it can't hurt. You can get skins from the RR download page.
                          4) Run RRConfig set the various settings. See the readme file for more details.

                          That should be it.
                          My worklog.
Status: VM GTI sold, got out of the CarPC tinkering hobby, but I still think about getting back in.

Thanks for the advice I am running xp so it shouldnt be a problem. I picked up on the skin thing yesterday and have been trying to get one installed. I get an error saying there is not one installed, or not valid or something.

happs, the one you downloaded from the link above only contains the binary, not the skins. You can download the installer from here.

                              http://www.majesticpw.com/roadrunner/Index.html

                              That should contain everything.

Read the RR FAQ for info on how to set it up.
