  • Help me not make the same mistakes :)

Ok i am quite a finatic of car stereos and computers so why not have a go at the whole CarPc. I was looking at spending $550 on an Eclipse Head Unit and then an additional 150 on their GPS so view on aboout a 300x 240 screen on the HU. So after debating this idea long and hard, i thought well lets see what a CarPc can really do and after lurking here for a few weeks i see that they have everything i really need. There are a few questions i have before i dive into this too deep. I was considering going with this and making it removeable http://sys.us.shuttle.com/Media.aspx , or is this a really bad idea. Anyways here are some simple questions"for you guys/girlswith CarPc's" i still have.

    # 1. Can bass cause any problems with the HD and things like that?
    # 2. What exactly can the touchscreen do? Can it be used like a mouse?
    # 3. Do i still need a Head Unit? Or can i use the TS for volume adjustment?
    # 4. I almost hate to ask, "im afraid to start a ford/chevy type of post but" what is the difference between Lilliput 8" VGA Touch Screen TFT LCD Display[809GL-NP/C/T] and the Xenarc 700TS - VGA Monitor with touchscreen[700TS] theese are the most likely choices for me.

OBTW this is all going in a 1994 Mustang GT.

Oh i almost forgot this was all started by the wife getting a 2003 Eddie Bauer Expedition with DVD and Navigation. Now my 2 kids wont touch my car with a 10 foot stick cause " Daddy your car doesnt have a TV " hahahaha. Here is a simple diagram of what was going to be but now i guess i may be changing that whole thing i have most of the stereo equipment now if i could take either my p3 933 or make the wife give up her Laptop id be half done Sorry for the long post but i think im addicted to the idea of 60Gb of music in my car, and a few external HD's of mpegs and jpg's.

The bass itself won't. Mounting a HDD to a subwoofer enclosure that vibrates like a punk chick on meth probably isn't such a good idea. Same goes for attaching the HDD to the magnet of the subwoofer.

    Yes.

    # 3. Do i still need a Head Unit? Or can i use the TS for volume adjustment?
You use the touchscreen to control an application that will adjust volume. No, you don't need a headunit unless you have a desire for AM radio.

One is 8" diagonal with a 4:3 aspect ratio and one is a 7" diagonal witha 16:9 aspect ratio (or something similar).

Go check out the FAQ Emporium forum and read. When you're done, read some more. A lot of people have given a lot of insight to help people wanting to pull off the same things you're looking to accomplish.
You should also check out the Show Off Your Project forum. It's a breeding ground for ideas (among other things, but we try to keep that on the QT).

        Is that sarcasm?

Seriously, I'm not going to dance around answering questions for anyone.
I give direct answers to questions.

There's way too much bull**** already. I'm certainly not going to add to that.

it's kinda large as far as a car install goes... especially if you plan on putting 2 12's in a mustang... why are you making it removable, especially if your thinking about not having a head unit.... once she's configured you really shouldn't need to take it out much for service/ maintanance & when it's not in your whole system is down....

also p4 isn't the best choice for a car install, there are others that may argue this, but the two biggest problem areas are power requirements & heat buildup, both of which are p4 weak points....

                      Planm, plan, plan.
Find one of the many wattage calculators and use those when calculating every piece of hardware you're going to utilize in the system.
Shuttle units aren't a bad thing. I'm using a Shuttle for my project, as well. Mine is going to be an AthlonXP Mobile CPU . I'm going to ditch the stock cooler and use a low-profile HSF. I'll cut down the case so it will be roughly 3 inches thick.

my first install in my current vehicle was a p4 shuttle that I to chopped up to be smaller, it was a p4,up until then I had much slower pc's in my car & I decided I wanted a blazing system in this car.....I had the system in my car for only a few months before I knew it had to go.... the opus 150 was on the edge power wize... I had the typical probblem of it working, but sometimes just shutting down..... that & the fan noise & the heat was enough for me to just rip it out & start over...... after a lot of reserch I realized that the best solution for powerful without the problems was to use a mobile solution.... I choose pentium m, I could have also choose athalon xp-m.

if you really don't want to make the same mistakes most people make initially then do it right the first time... the biggest mistake most make is they try to cut corners to save some money, but then ultimately realize the short commings after & either have to live with less than ideal, or re-do it, which in the end costs more!

as DP says, plan plan plan, do it right the first time...... maybe you can be one of the few who actually get it right the first time by learning from others mistakes

the only awsome setups you will find are going to be either pentium m or athalon xp-m..., most other solutions will either be wimpy(pIII, via, etc..) or a wasteful power hungry hot box....

You being a sound guy, I would keep the H/U.

Carputers need a lot tweaking, fine tuneing etc. It is nice to have access to amazing sound if your carputer is down for improvements whatever.

eg. My lilliput had to go back 3 times before it worked flawlessly, that was 3 months, now imagine you haveing NO sound for 3 months

You will want to control your soundstage as well by the looks of your set up. You will need a processor or H\U for PEQ, Time Alignment, X-Over frequencies and slopes etc.

Does that deck have digital in? Also go DC-DC for power you dont want to introduce any noise to that wonderful set up. Where is the computer going to be installed, trunk?

I'd say get a Xenarc, that has autopower on, and auto switch to AV. I don;t think you can do the automatic switch to the Lilli even with the programming codes.

I'd also say to go for a DC-DC PSU. The 150W from Opus, with a mini-itx board has a lot of power left in it.

So im thinking of a Pentium or athlon Mobile to save power. I believe roughly 1.6-2.?Ghz should do the trick, i am really just wanting to use a rather large HD and a DVD/CD slot load in the dash or somwhat hidden in the dash. I would truely like to run 5.1+ sound card but since i dont think there is a good Head Unit out there with maybe an Optical input i may just gowith the No HU option. I amassuming that the 150 should run a M processor a slot DVD/CD, GPS, HD and maybe a TouchScreen, and video card. The one thing i was wondering is does the TouchScreen have a USB or sometype of connection to use the touch sensitive part? Sorry for all the Questions, but i promise i will post all my pics and Ty's to all. That is one of my other passions "Photography" so anyone near the Panama City are who wants shots of their car let me know i got a bunch of camera equipment and i am alos a pretty good editor.
