  • Questions regarding a laptop installation

Hey guys. Thought about doing this a few years ago, and have finally scrounged up the cash to be able to actually made it a reality.

First of all though, the cash isn't exactly plentiful, so I believe i'll be going with my stone-age era Dell CP M166ST. (A Pentium 166 Lappy).

Now my first question revolves around power output needed to run this thing in my car. I've seen a few posts mention that you can use DC adapters, i.e. travel kits and the like. I have been unsuccessfull in finding a official Dell one, but I found this 'multi-laptop' one, and it looks like it's compatible with mine.

    http://www.mobilepower.com.au/au1/b/uca0001a.html

What I was wondering though, is this thing powerful enough to run my laptop sufficiently? It's 90watts with 15 V to 24 V and capacity = 4740 mAh

Looking at the back of my laptops power supply, it reads

    50-50hz 20V
    AC 100V 3.5A
    120VA
    ____________
    input 100 - 240v~1.5A 70W Cont.

I have a vague idea of what this means thanks to searching around the FAQs, but a little clarification would help.

Would this be acceptable? It's basically only going to be used to play music, and I plan to incorporate a touchscreen LCD lilliput or such. Eventually I will be wanting to upgrade the laptop, and maybe use it to occasionally play movies and the like.

I have a MTX 10" sub, amp, and 3" splits in my car (1987 Toyota MR2).

Finally, I was wondering about getting the sound from my PC to the cars speakers. I'm not sure if my Amp has an Aux input, but i'm pretty sure it doesn't. It's a JVC KD-SX875. I've seen some aux input adapters such as this one
except i'm not sure whether my model will work or not. I don't know if has CD Stacker support, (anyone able to correct me, or know what to look for to see if it does?) Unfortunately, I don't have the user manual since it came with my car. I also have another Sony Xplod Head unit from a few years back, but it's in the old car and I'm not available to view it currently. I'll have a look at that one tomorrow. Hopefully there is a CD Changer adapter.

Failing that, I think i'll look into getting another head unit, unless there is some better way. I'd like something that provides good sound performance without costing too much.

Sorry about the long post, and cheers for the help.

You mean the DC Adapter powersupply I linked to earlier?
Also, can I just run the lilliput off the main power that goes to the car's stereo?

Hrmm I haven't tried. But for the moment I plan it just to be a MP3 player untill I can get something a bit beefier to play with.

          Foun from here:

If your low on cash and your car has no AUX input , get a fm transmitter (aka : fm modulator). This way you loose a little bit of sound quality (but still sounds good). Or buy a cheap head unit with aux input (check for aiwa on ebay).

In case you're looking for a pretty cheap head unit, after searching on eBay the headunit I ended up with (just looking mainly for the cheapest one with Aux-In) was this one:
            http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-DHD-CAR-CD-C...QQcmdZViewItem

$68 after shipping and mandatory insurance. AM/FM/CD Player (CD-R and RW) and Auxillary RCA Input = all I needed, really.

Cheers for all the help guys. This is great.

Ooh nice find. Thanks. However I think i'd still rather go with this one because it's a multiple laptop charger, and one day I would like to buy a new laptop. Plus, it's also available directly here in Australia, so I won't be screwed when it comes to shipping prices.

Would there be any advantage with going for the factory Dell one you mentioned over this multiple unit one? The website doesn't say the stats on the dell one, so i'm not sure of it's power output or anything.

Hrmm. This just might be the sort of thing i'm after. I just found out that neither of my head units support the Aux In through the CD Changer method, so this sort of thing would be ideal.

Does anyone know of any decent cheap head units with Aux-In that I can find in Australia? Doing a quick ebay search revealed this head unit which seems like it might fit the picture... Tis a real ugly lookin thing though...

I'm generally looking at the sub $200 unit, (cheaper the better) but if there's something really good, for not much more, I'm all ears.

Hey, just found this one on ebay.

                http://cgi.ebay.com.aau/New-Detachab...QQcmdZViewItem

Says it's also a DVD player... and it's surprisingly really cheap.

Is there anything about this I should be wary of?

he also has this slightly cheaper one for sale

                http://cgi.ebay.com.au/New-Detachabl...QQcmdZViewItem

They both say "Front Panel Audio/Video Aux-In"

Does this mean the jacks are in the front? I can't see them in the pictures...

Just out of interest, would either of these suit my needs?

They both say they're a samsung, but don't indicate the model name. I'll email him and ask.
