  • Proper VGA cable run

I'm starting to put together a plan for a PC for my 2004 Audi A4 Avant (wagon). There is a perfect spot behind a flip-down panel on the left side behind the back seat (all the way to the rear of the car). It has an empty plastic box that is probably designed for adding a disc changer or sat radio. Plenty big to hold the PC. Plenty of room, some extra air space for heat, and great access. The amp & subwoofer are mounted behind a similar panel on the opposite wall.

My question is what kind of line to you guys use for the long VGA run from the rear of the car to the LCD up front?

I will also be running USB the length of the car for the touch screen (Xenarc). Any issues with the length of the run for standard USB on the VIA MB?

    Thanks.

    Iused some cat5, I tried mini coax, I bought a 5mtr extension, I bout 3 2mtrs extension, and I tried all combinations.

Some work better than others, cat5 works ok upto a few mtrs, 2 of the 3mtr extensiojns worked fine, 1 is a pig, the 5 mtr extension was a little better than cat5 at 3 mtrs

I stuck with the 5mtr cable, worked ok.

only answer is to play witha few cables because what works fine on 1 monitor/gfx card can be poor on a different machine, its madness.

get a few cheap ones off ebay and play.

I use a VGA Cable.. Got an extra 10' one for sale in my sig, but why mess around with cat5 etc when you can just do a straight VGA extension. IMO, of course.

If you're using a Xenarc why not just buy a 5 meter cable

You'll get the USB, VGA and RCA's in one run

Cost, perhaps? You can run seperate USB, VGA, and RCA cables for half that price, and it works in case you ever don't use a Xenarc..

            Thanks for the options.

I've done some pretty long VGA, component, DVI, etc. runs building my home theater. I was thinking that the VGA might be pretty thick for tight runs in the car depending on openings I find to run it through.

I guess I'll have to see how things look when I start pulling things apart to find possible runs.
